is it better to take lecture and lab courses during the same semester/quarter? or lec first then lab? or does it not make a difference at all?

It's good to do them together so the material from each reinforce each other.
If you have to do them separately I'd do lecture and then lab.

I don't understand why you wouldn't take them together if you had a choice. I took gen chem II lab after lecture because of schedule conflicts, and it was really annoying. Get them both overwith, I say.

A friend and I both ended up taking orgo II lab a year after we took the lecture. Man, we set some speed records... while others floundered about, we were in the fast lane. We once finished a 3 hour lab in 37 minutes. 😀 "Boil, DAMN YOU, boil!" Good times.

i originally thought that you had to take them together. but then i noticed that some students took the lec during one quarter then the lab during the next. so i was just wondering if there were any advantages to taking them one after the other.

Personally, I've done better when I've taken the lab later, that way I'm really solid on the material. It's really just a matter of preference though.

Take the lab during - all the studying you do during the year for the lab really helps you for the course at the end of the year I found.

It really depends on the course. For bio, physics, and gen chem, I found that the lectures and labs were concurrent and each really reinforced the other. I would definitely recommend taking these together. For orgo, though, at my school, the labs and lectures have zilch to do with each other and for some reason, the labs are *ahead* of the lectures. So I made sure to take one semester of lecture before I started the labs, and frankly I wish I could've had both semesters of lecture first.
