i currently manage in retail, have great techs, but a so-so staff pharmacist. i'm pretty tired of retail being the same old same old, but am very comfortable where i am since i've been here a couple years. i was offered a long term care job (closed door), staff pharmacist only (no management, yea!), would take a pay cut and an increase in commute, but would get to learn a new skill and work with a great pharmacy manager. hours are better at the new job but you have to be on-call a couple nights/wk.

should i take the job?

how much of a pay cut are you talking about?

pay cut would be 2.68/hr less, my current 401k company matches 6% vs. only 2% at the new job. plus LTC doesn't give any performance bonuses like retail does.

that's about 5500 less a year in salary, not including 401K. How much is your current job paying per hour?

If you are making $56.23/hr then making $5500 less a year is not much. Go where you think you will be more happy. It's better to take a risk while you still can. Most of the times it is worth it.

I do not think you should take the job. Run away as fast as you can!!!!

Oh by the way, where is this job located, the name of the company and a contact person. No reason I am just curious.

2.68/hour less is nothing, go for it! You could always pick up a shift or two part-time retail if you needed the extra dough.

I think you should ask: Would taking the job make you happy?

What aspect of LTC would you be involved in? Quite frankly I couldn't stand doing the job of most of the pharmacists in my LTC IPPE. It was primarily just checking all day long. Right Drug, right sig, right quantity, repeat. For who knows how many hundreds of scripts per day. The staff were friendly and the environment was great, but even retail seemed more fun than that, and certainly more interesting. If you were a consultant pharmacist for Long-term, that may be more interesting, or at least mentally stimulating. In the end I guess it depends on what your interests are.
