Should I take this research opportunity, or should I wait for one more relevant?

So just got accepted into Nasa's SARP program for the summer. I personally am super interested, but it just isnt hugely relevant to medicine. Alot of its focus is on atmospheric measurements and various other environmental things. Additionally they are giving me $6,000 if I choose to go. Basically, I find the research incredibly fascinating and want to be a part of it, it looks good resume wise, and they are giving me alot of money as well, but should I turn this one down for other possible opportunities more relevant to medicine? (I'm applying this summer)

I say do it, especially if they're paying you. Everyone and their brother has worked in a microbiology, genetics, or neuro lab. I think this experience will make you stand out in a very unique and positive way.

Enjoy your awesome, upcoming summer!

Thanks for the advice! And don't worry, I fit the cookie cutter pretty well lol, worked with stem cells for a few semester researching Huntington's disease

Sounds like an awesome gig to me. Go for it.

I agree with the others - do it! There may be relevancy to medicine (even if it's just tangential) that you aren't aware of yet. Also, there are certainly divisions of NASA that have involvement in medicine and health, and you could use this opportunity to network and meet some folks who are involved in that aspect. Even if your personal project isn't related to medicine, you can likely meet with a couple people and learn about what they do. Sounds like a great summer gig.

7 step plan for success.

1. Do NASA program.
2. Get to med school /residency.
3. Realize you're really really awkward and can't socialize anymore.
4. Succumb to online dating, because your cold openers only work when you're wearing a white coat.
5. Fill out the part on OKCupid where it says, "Graduated from Space Camp."
6. Feel hella cool.
7. Only cool guys get the girl.
