The poster was talking about the merger between AOA and acgme which opens up residencies to DO students increasing difficulty for carribean graduates.
Yea that's not what the merger does at all. Actually, it's pretty much the exact opposite of what the merger does.

ACGME residency positions are already "open" to DOs. The merger actually opens up all the previously DO-only residency positions to IMGs (i.e. Carribbean grads). It's actually a big benefit to Caribbean grads.

Only Half of DO's match NRMP currently, going forward everyone will. There are Currently an excess of 1000 spots in the DO application pool where people do not match into, we dont know how many of those spots will actually be certified under ACGME or will just go away. Whether it benefits Caribbean grads or harms them is up in the air considering MD schools have also been increasing class sizes.

The merger was between AUC and ROSS, I believe. NOT AUA.

Looks like it was already mentioned that its the AOA and ACGME merger, not merger of schools.

You also asked, but I didn't quote it, about when that takes effect? It's already in effect, but the deadline is 2020. Many programs have already switched/have dual accreditation right now. Some programs will be closing. Residency spots are only increasing by a margin if not stagnating/reducing due to a few closures of programs that are supposed to otherwise migrate. New DO programs, and a few MD I believe, have opened recently/opening soon, and MD and DO class sizes across the board have seemingly been increasing.

Sorry for replying late. I have heard back from Cali. I am NOT ELIGIBLE CA residencies even if I transfer to AUA. They said, "All schooling must be completed at an approved school(s)."

I heard back from NY as well. They wrote that as long as my last year is within an approved school (like AUA), I am eligible to apply for NY residencies.

I still think 6 mos and $17k is worth being able to apply to NY residencies and get licensed in the state. The majority of successful US IMGs I know have done or are doing their residency in NY state.

AHH! MY bad. I Misunderstood. When does the AOA and ACGME merger go in effect?

The transition has already begun, and it will be complete in 2020.

If you can transfer to a more reputable school (AUA) then do it. While your chances for matching out of AUA aren't great by any measure, they're a much better known school with a better track record of matching people. Windsor's founder has been investigated for fraud and other crimes and literally is a dead end for anyone's career. Run, and don't bother looking back.

In looking at the OP's thread title, this comes to mind:

I certainly feel like that 🙁

I'm not sure what your total debt load is. Is the 17000 your total med school debt or just what you considered wasted on your medical school rotations?

I'm not sure of your background or why you ended up at Windsor to begin with, but have you considered a different career path. I'm not trying to shame you or tell you you're not smart or anything like that. If 17000 (or even 77000) is your total debt if you walked away now, its nothing compared to doubling or tripling it by the time you are finished. You are at a high risk of not matching even if you transfer and get a 270 on your CK. If you are dead set on medicine, it seems like your areas of potential residency work are very limited, if you match. It seems like quite a gamble to me.

Nonetheless, I wish you the best, and hope whatever you do, you end up fulfilled.
