Hi guys,

I am a PY1 and it's hard to look for pharmacy intern job at my school area because it's small and PY2 and PY3 took the job already. I would like to do something while I am in school. It's kindda silly but I would like to volunteer at hospital in my area so that I can make connections and also learn some experiences in inpatient pharmacy. Have anyone done what before?
Thanks

Please don't use PY1. Just say first year or P1 if you're that lazy.

How is this relevant at all?

Anyways, to the OP, it doesnt hurt to volunteer as long as it doesn't get in the way of school. You cant intern until you finish your first semester anyways. If you go drop off your CV to wherever you want to intern for next summer then you might have a shot against the 2nd and 3rd year kids. That's what I did when I was a PY1 and I got an offer since I did it early. A lot of kids waited until their school year was over to apply for summer internships and by that time it was too late.

It's relevant because PY1 sounds like its an abbreviation for "post-year 1" which makes me think the person is either a unemployed new grad or a new grad doing a residency.....obviously the advice given would be different for someone who is a P1 vs someone who is a PY1.

Thanks for your respond. It's like I have talked with you before. Are you WSU student?

This is the mistake and reason why you're not able to get a job as an intern. What you want to do is see if there are any other pharmacy schools in your area/state and apply for positions that are a good 15+ miles away from these schools. The farther away the intern position is from campus(es), the lower the odds of you having to compete with other pharmacy students. If that job site requires you to make hour-long commutes, then so be it. At least you'll get the experience and the commute time will be a small price to pay for you getting ahead of the competition.

Yeah Im a 2nd year student at WSU. WSU students uses PY1 as pharmacy year 1. Its just how everyone says it here.

Anyways...Spokane is a small city. You can try interning at Spokane Valley. There isn't much beyond that area. Its all farmland.
