Should I wear pants to my interview?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Pants went out of style with the powdered wig.

Maybe you should...it might get a little cold wearing only boxers or underwear.

Guess you could wear a dress or skirt? Not sure if that would go over well

Nope...go butt naked. Don't wear a shirt either for that matter 😀

But seriously folks...for all of us girls out there, I heard that wearing a skirt instead of pants was an unwritten rule. (That's what I thought this thread would be about when I checked out the title.) Is that true?

In heard from a Columbia admissions person that pants are ok only for the laid back West Coast. East Coast schools prefer skirts, but be careful about the length, no revealing slits, etc etc. As if we need more to stress out for in this process 🙄

Only if they are hunter green. Otherwise you will get rejected.

At my first interview (Pitt), there were three girls there and they all wore pants. Just an observation.

I still have a way to go before I'm interviewing, but I'm horrified that women would expected to wear skirts. 😱 It is not the 1950s anymore, for goodness' sake!! I'm sure those same schools wouldn't find it very professional if a male student were to show up with his calves showing. What works for a man should be acceptable on a woman as well -- not to mention that skirts are impractical and limit one's activities. Any school that would look badly on me for interviewing in a very polished and professional Ann Taylor pantsuit is not a school I'd feel comfortable attending anyway, no matter its prestige or reputation. Sorry if this comes off as a little pedantic, but in my mind, a double standard for women's and men's clothing is just plain sexist.

Bell Bottoms Baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEAH!

I know this isn't what the thread was originally about, but I agree with Hethera about the skirt vs. pants suit issue for women. I personally like how I look better in a skirt suit, but it would really bother me if the school actually cared or looked down on a pant suit, as long as I looked professional. I'm probably going to wear a pants suit for fall/winter interviews so I don't freeze!!

Actually i am taking both a pant suit & a skirt suit just in case something goes wrong.

Pants nowadays are as professional looking as skirts.

Polyester. It's all in the polyester.

Honestly, pant or skirt should NOT matter as long as you look professional. This is 2000 freaking 3, why are we still forcing ourselves to wear skirts?

When I go on my interview in the middle of winter, there is no wa I am freezing my ass off in a skirt.

Get yourself a nice pant suit, and you can even be daring and get something nicely colored. Put some flava/life into this...act like you want it.

p:s- I look better in colored (tanish) pant suit so that's why I advocate pants.

I heard of this guy who played the piano with his wang after he was aske dif he had any special talents and he got in at Hopkins. So yeah, no pants-no problems. Peace. 😉

If you interview at Columbia, also make sure you use clean-wipes after using the restroom.

and lets be honest here, adcoms are only looking for well hung applicants.

a little embarassing don't you think to have to look at a cadaver day in and day out that was a lot more blessed than you. 😛

adcoms are only looking out for your best interests and trying to save you from this tri-weekly pain. 😉

this *could* be the '08 AA thread.....

I have read countless numbers of books and literature on the web about dressing for the interview. I just had to laugh out loud. I have read (in 99%) of the literature that pant suits are in no way acceptable for a woman to wear to the interview. No makeup, no nailpolish (except clear), no perfume, only neutral coloured (Canadian spelling, I know) nylons, no heels over 1", classic black, navy or gray suits ONLY, plain, non trendy oxford white collared shirt....the list goes on. I'd like to know (or meet) the people that wrote all of that. I am, by no means a feminist, but that is ridiculous. 60% of med students are female now, how can advice on dressing for interviews be so .... outdated and rigid?
For myself, I will be wearing a tailored black classic Ann Klein suit (only because that is what I own, and is in my closet), but I will be wearing (minimal) makeup. I will be wearing nalipolish (french manicure), and I will be wearing heels about 1 1/2 " high. I am taking both pants and a skirt though. If it is raining and cold, I will wear the pants. But I personally prefer to wear skirts - it makes me feel more confident, and feminine. I think it's wise to bring both, just in case..... If I spill my coffee all over everything (which happens often), I will have a back up (lol).

Thongs and stiletto is the only way to go? 😎
