How bout we just do away with the science requirments and send all premeds to a four year language school. Doing that should insure that there is no cultural insensitivity among racist docs who can only speak one language.

While I understand the tongue in cheek nature of this thread, I must inject a bit of reality...there was an article a month or 2 ago in the Boston Globe that talked about the recent influx of immigrants from a small African village who speak a language that no one in the medical community knows. Additionally, the interpreter consult service the local hospitals employ for languages that for which they do not have interpreters doesn't have more than 1 or 2 people in the country.

I'm thankful that I don't have to deal with language barriers to medical care in my own life (being a native speaker of English), but as a provider for those who aren't necessarily as "fortunate", I can only begin to imagine the fear of being in a country where NO ONE speaks your language. Makes you understand why McDonalds has picture menus....maybe ERs should have pictures for patients to point out their ailment...

Ich spreche nicht Deutsches, aber ich m?chte Ihnen zeigen, da? BabelFish eine wundervolle ?bersetzung Software ist. Bitte Lachen an allen Fehlern hier. :)

Sooooo... LET'S ALL BE PRACTICAL AND LEARN SPANISH, OK???

Hilfe, Hilfe. Ich werde verletzt und einen Doktor ben?tige. Helfen Sie mir? Ich kann nicht einen ?bersetzer mir leisten, und ich habe nicht medizinische Versicherung. What would you do?

Many of you guys are over-using sarcasm as in having docs learn a million languages. The whole issue came from Wake forrest requiring a Spanish class during med school, if you don't want to take a class in Spanish, then don't apply to Wake Forrest.

Some of these schools may indeed start making such classes a requirement because during your third and fourth years you will be exposed to mainly Spanish-speaking patients, like at UCSD and USC. If you don't want to learn the language, again, don't apply to these schools. Personally, I wouldn't have a gripe if med schools bordering Canada, made French a requirement during med school. That's just another factor people should use when deciding on what schools to apply.

I thought becoming a doctor was about being a capable and compassionate person; not sarcastic a-holes?

So, who is only helping the Bavarians?

by the time i start residency there will be real-time translators built into my PDA anyway.

Yeah! I guess we need a "real-time universal translator transceiver". I hope it will be able to cook for me as well.

S.

I totally agree with you Jmejia, medicine its all about helping people, being a capable and compassionate person. Its useless to discuss with some people who can just talk without even knowing what they are talking about. As for treating german patients, if there were a big number in my clinic, I would definitely higher translators, but not charge the patient for its services. What really pisses me off is the sarcasm some of you are using. In a few years spanish will be almost a requesite in society, since in some years we'll be the majority in states like cali, illinois, if we arent alreaady.
So please, dont be such as--oles and stop being so sarcastic.

What you are saying is "We don't have to learn English...In a few years we'll outnumber them and they will have to learn spanish." This after you tried to make me look like the bad guy because I think you should show a little respect for this country. Thanks for showing us your true colors.

How stupid. I agree with Jmejia...except the a-hole part. I just think it's stupid. In history class, we were applying how ignorance is bliss when it concerns dealing with "Other" populations such as immigrants. I won't bother to go into it on this thread. I just pray the interview process can weed out some of you insensitive pricks--or at least give you a reality check as to how real physicians don't act this way.

I want to see the tongue clicking language integrated into the medical curricula here in the US. It looks like a load of fun! Seriously!

Yeah, that's what my asian siblings used to call me. I wonder why?

Racist is the last thing people who know me would label me.
