hi, is there anyone who wish you went to the state school instead of private school or vice versa?

I imagine the biggest issue for most folks regarding state vs private is cost (although the cost of some state schools is nearing that of some privates). My advice on this is to think of dental school as not being "all about you." Sure it would be nice if your folks have lots of money and can afford to foot your costs. But if not, then tell yourself that you might at least be able to provide such a benefit to someone close to you from the next generation (your kid, nephew/niece etc). There are ways to mitigate the cost differences (military and public health service etc). Such duty may not be your preference, but again, it might help if you think in terms of future benefits that you can acccrue for your family.

I got accepted to a private school and weight options ofr a while. Ultimately, for me it came down to cost....I couldn't justify going to an Ivy league and putting out an extra $250,000. That's a lot of real money...

At the end of the day, you're still a dentist regardless if you want to state or ivy private. Just something to think about.

How excited would you be if you were on "Deal or No Deal" and won $100,000. That is what it is like by going to a $100,000 cheaper school. Except, the game show is four years long and tough no matter what game show you go to.

go public if you get in. i personally didn't get into my state school, so i had to find a private school to take me.

I chose UOP over UCSF. UOP gave me a small scholarship and since UCSF isn't that cheap for a state school, I would have saved around $65k but would be in school an extra year. It took me a while to decided, but since this was a career change for me, I wanted to be done sooner than later. I also felt UOP was a better fit for what I wanted out of a dental school.

what if
private schools are ivy schools? (ie penn and columbia)

I'm not going to make any friends by saying this, but the only people who consider PENN and Columbia to be big names are the people who go there.

Harvard - big name. Yale - big name. MIT - big name. Penn - ummm... yeah I think I've heard of that. 😉

Go to the cheapest school that accepts you. In the long run you will thank yourself for doing that. I have yet to meet a dentist who said that the school you go to matters. All the schools will pretty much give you what you need and rest will be up to you when you out in the real world. I am at public school and I love it here. Except for couple of exceptions like UOP(3 yrs) and Harvard, cheaper the better.
