I am aware that a 3.0 is a low Ugrad GPA. however, I hear that if you turn it around in the postbac program, it is a bit forgiving? say if you have a 3.0 Ugrad GPA and a 4.0 in a post0bac (programs for people with little or no science background).

Is this true? or will a low Undergrad GPA haunt you from getting into a medical school in the US no matter what?

thanks

It'll haunt you no matter what, but the more years of 4.0 grades you get, the better your chances of getting into med school. One year of 4.0 after a 3.0 performance in undergrad is probably not quite enough to impress, but it'll certainly help.

Depends where you are going - DO or MD.

If DO, postbac is the way go, because their application system (AACOMAS) allows "grade forgiveness." This means that when you retake a course, AACOMAS will calculate your newest grade into your GPA, allowing you to "raise" your GPA much faster. The MD system (AMCAS) will average your two grades, making it much more difficult. So a year of 4.0 postbac should pull your GPA to, say, a 3.2. With a 30 MCAT, you have a good shot at DO school.

If MD, you should look into SMP programs. They are more expensive, and a higher risk than postbac, but if you perform well (3.5 minimum), then you open up several doors that would not be possible with a year of postbac. You are looking at more of a 32+ MCAT going down this route.
