I would just like to know what record the SIN card keeps, and can schools get access to the information supplied by a SIN number?

The SIN is an identification number issued by government and the only information that is linked to it directly is that you are legally entitled to be in Canada. This information is accessible to the schools by the simple fact that you have a SIN.
However, credit bureaus and other agencies such as banks use it to keep track of your credit record. If you give the SIN when you apply for a credit card, hook up your power etc any defaults will show up on your credit score linked to your SIN. You should never give your SIN to any agency other than your school or a branch of the government. The power company has no right to demand it and is not a safe custodian of personal information (and don't get me onto the phone company). If your school wants to, they can do a credit check on you using the SIN. That's pretty much it in terms of what personal information they can get using this. Cheers,
M
