I recently received a request to submit for an extensive background check from a residency program that I have an upcoming interview with. This includes social security/marital status, employment history. The are requiring this to attend the upcoming interview. Specifically, they are asking for in writing (via email or fax):

"List in chronological order EVERYTHING you have done including high school. This would include places of employment, hospitals, teaching institutions, private practice, corporations, military assignments, government agencies, and locum tenens assignments. You are required to account for any and all time, including summers. NO time gaps will be accepted. You will need to label any unemployed time as “vacation, “sabbatical”, or “moving” (whatever is appropriate). Provide details regarding these time gaps in the description field. A CV will NOT replace completing this section."

Am I correct in feeling this is a both sketchy and a match violation?

May I ask which program this is for? Are you sure it isn't spam/phishing email?

marital status is a match violation

would send a message by either reporting the program or replying back "I don't think your program would be a good fit"

would do that unless you are desperate to match

Is this for a position for the FBI or CIA?

Yeah as a non trad who worked sort of a freelance job for a long time there’s no way I could do this even if I wanted to.

Sounds like it’s probably part of an institutional policy wherever that program is located. You will definitely have to complete a BG check prior to starting employment at any program.

Yep. Off the top of my head I've worked 17 different jobs including/since high school, most of which I kept zero documentation from.

OP, I personally would decline the interview unless you're desperate.

I also wouldn't include my SSN on anything I'm emailing a program. It is very odd that they would ask for it.

I'm glad to hear that it isn't just me that feels this is really unusual. I hear you on the complex prior work history as a nontraditional as well. The only time I've ever had to do something like this before was when I was considering the military. And this is just to get the interview... I wonder what kind of biometric locks they will have to get into the general inpatient unit?

This is stuff that usually comes up AFTER they decide to hire you. Doing it prior to interviewing to me is a red flag.

And yes, asking about marital status and stuff like that is a match violation. Up to you if you really want to report it, but you have pretty solid evidence if they e-mailed you (as I presume).
