thanks

I recommend going to the library and consulting texts on gastroenterology physiology/pathophysiology. I'm sure that if you did a search online you could also find what you are looking for. The sooner you learn how to seek and find for yourself, the better. Best of luck in your studies.

E. coli (Escherichia coli?) are bacteria that can be found in large intestine. They can be either normal flora or can cause illnesses. You probably can find them in every toilet bowls.

I am not sure that you often see any germs in small intestine under normal condition though. I don't know much about other germs probably because they have not been mentioned too much.

There's some H. pylori in the stomach. Some studies suggest that high levels of H. pylori may lead to ulcers and stomach cancer.

I just opened up and dissected out the small intestines today!

Duodenum, Jejunum, Ileum.
Vasa recta.
Meckel's diverticulum and the Ileocecal junction!!
Yaaaaaaay.... 😀

(sorry, six hours of lab today - kinda punchy...)

You would probably have an easier time searching for the answer to your question in a book at the library. Or use yahoo as a starting point. People on here hate to do other people's homework for them. Also, I closed this thread in the other forums, but am keeping this one open even though it doesn't belong in pre-allo. I just don't know where to put it...

Good luck with your project. 🙂

My repost from the MD/PhD forum:

Well, I hope there isn't any fungi or yeast in our intestines. First of all, there isn't any resident microbes (normally...sometimes they are in trace numbers) in the small intestine. The microorganisms reside in your large intestine also called the colon. Those microorganisms are Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogenes, Bacteroides fragilis, some cocci (sphere shaped) and bacilli (rod shaped). (Don't know their names). If this is a science fair project, you should fine quite a bit of information on E.coli as that bacteria is the most characterized bacteria in science.

The previous poster is partly correct. In the absence of disease the UPPER small intestine contains a very low number of microbes. Finding of signifigant microbes in the upper small intestine would suggest disease.

The LOWER small intestine, along with the large intestine, is normally heavily colonized with microorganisms. The normal flora there protect against ingestion-acquired pathogens.

I remember anatomy.. we cut open the cat's stomach and I started throwing around the worms and juices I found inside. Good stuff!
