SMDEP 2015 THREAD

My application is still not in review for Howard.....and I haven't received an email😱

This waiting is so scary. I don't know whether to be excited for acceptance or scared for rejection. It's especially scary for me since this is my one and only chance to apply to the program since I'm already a sophomore.

I feel the same way. But I look at it this, if I don't get in, there are a ton of other opportunities. Don't lose hope! 🙂

My application is now in review for U of Washington. I've been in review for Howard since earlier this week. Still waiting on Duke.

If we get rejected do they tell us why? Or can we call and be like I'd like to know the weakness and strength of my applications? Might as well since they technically are med schools so it'd be good practice for whatever application cycle we are.

I was rejected from all 3 sites last year and I emailed every site and they basically gave me a generic spiel on never giving up and to keep trying lol

That's it though? They didn't tell you anything specific about why you were rejected what your application was missing? I'm wondering because if you get rejected by a medical school you can ask them why they rejected you and they tell you what you need (i.e. you didn't have any volunteering or gpa was lacking or something helpful at least)

From past threads, I've read some people calling to do that and they got good feedback

Do you guys really think it'll be that hard for us to get into atleast one? I thought that if you had your app completed in December you were in excellent standing.

maybe I should have called, but yeah they didn't say anything specific

What time did you apply last year? Early or late?

last year I waited until reaaaaallly late to apply. This year I think we have a good chance because we applied early.

I agree because from all the stalking I've done on old threads, almost everyone that applied early and had their apps completed December got into top sites (duke, yale,Columbia, ucla, etc. )

Well that and I am sure that there is a correlation between people who submit their application early and those who have a strong application. That being said I'm sure many strong applicants waited until the last minute or just didn't know about it.

I mean that's what I thought which is why I was scared! But I hope you're right then! Because then all of us would get in 🙂

Yeah I mean granted your application is strong, I think you're in excellent shape if you apply early.

Is it only me or the "Application Status" page has changed. I can't see the Action Dates anymore, for my letters of recommendation or my transcript.

Which sites did you apply to last cycle? Did you apply to the same one?

Mine looks the same

Hey guys! Last week, a duke and case smdep representative came to my school to talk about the program! The lady from duke said to not freak out too much about the early admission! Like they are not going to fill up 90% of their spots with the early admission! (but thats only true about duke, idk about the rest of the sites)
Also, the main thing that they look for is student who have the potential to improve. The duke representative also said that sometimes they reject students who may be "overqualified" because they are already on the right path to med school and have the resources to get there. Not trying to freak y'all out, but just something to keep in mind!

That makes me nervous. 😕

I think that's only true for duke not the rest. Just look at past threads and you'll see that everyone who applied super early got into top sites like Columbia. Those that didn't apply early didn't get in to top sites. So for those schools early admission is a big deal. That's what I've been told from people who have attended those schools in the past.

Hey I meant that post for people who do not qualify for early admission - like there is still a chance that you can get in to your top site!

Thanks for the input, nice to hear from the representatives! I also talked to the representatives of Yale, Colombia and U wash. they told me it is the opposite for them, that they are extremely competitive. They told me that at least 900 applicants apply to their program overall so that applying early does in fact make a difference. So that's why I stayed away from them. But I agree with what you are saying, they can't fill all spots from early admission! So I also think that that information might only be for Duke because every program is a little different they emphasis whatever they want.

Didn't know that they reject you if you are "overqualified". That makes me wonder what "overqualified" is exactly, any thoughts guys?

Yeah they said that places like yale and Colombia get like 800/900 applicants, while less popular places like Case get 400/500 applicants!

SEVEN HOURS! I need to find something to do to keep my mind off it ! :arghh:
