Hey all,

I'm going to be attending the SMDEP at UT Houston this summer. I'm excited, a little nervous, and a bit confused on what to bring (which is why I'm posting this!).

What did y'all bring as far as clothes, dorm necessities, school supplies, money, etc. goes? I heard we are supposed to wear scrubs to class, and should bring business casual clothing for other events.

I'm a girl, so if any ladies that have attended SMDEP could reply to this, I'd really appreciate it! xxx

Congrats! Are you planning to apply to Texas dental schools this year?

Also, to answer your question. I think it is best to call the administrators to answer your questions. Just because not many of us are admitted to the program. Goodluck!

Hey! Congrats on getting in!! I did SMDEP at Case Western last year and it was one of my favorite experiences ever. You're going to have an amazing time and learn all sorts of things!

We did not have to wear scrubs to class, or bring scrubs. When we shadowed, our scrubs were provided for us by the hospital. I just brought around 20 normal, summer outfits (I'm assuming you'll have a washing machine/dryer like I did), three fancy dress outfits, a couple pairs of jeans, some work-out clothes and a swim suit.

I also brought my own bedding and towels, but I had the luxury of being able to do this because I drove. I also brought a box fan, which was a super good idea. It got very, VERY hot in our dorm.

As far as school supplies went, I brought two spiral notebooks, a folder, some mechanical pencils and my DAT Prep book. I found that these supplies worked out well.

We were given Case Cash which took care of our extra costs for the most part. But also had my credit card and some cash (~$100) on me just in case (emergency cab money, etc.)

Because I went to Case and not Texas, I would make sure you contact those people, too! There should be a FB group for all of you that got accepted, and you can ask and see what else they're bringing! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! You're going to have such an amazing time. SMDEP seriously changed my life!

Awesome! Thanks so much for your feedback. I'm planning on applying to UT Houston not this summer, but next year, so hopefully this will be something of a foot in the door! 🙂

Congrats on getting accepted to attend SMDEP! I attended SMDEP last summer at UT Houston and it was a BLAST! I was skeptical about it since everyone said you will have the time of your life and I couldn't imagine how it could be so fun, but it was an amazing experience! You become very close with many of the students, and you end up planning your own little fun activities in the evenings since the coordinators took away some of the field trips (NASA, Astros Game, Museum).
I'm a guy, so I can't really help you too much with clothes, but I can say that scrubs are necessary (at least 4-5 pairs). Everyone wore scrubs at the beginning, but then people decided to dress up in business causal attire instead. Some people wore scrubs everyday to class, but I would say bring clothes to dress up professionally in.
I would bring some pencils, pens, and paper, but they provide everything else. They even provide a cool little backpack, but I chose to use my own backpack since it was more comfortable.
Definitely bring money with you, as you'll want to eat out instead of eating at the Hermann cafeteria for breakfast, lunch, and dinner lol.

If you have any other questions, feel free to message me! I'm so excited for you haha.
