Smoking Pot or Underage Drinking

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it automatic grounds for rejection to/dismissal from pharmacy school to get a citation for possession of pot or underage drinking?

Always wondered this..

Ya, if it's a pretty dry campus with strict beliefs, and values..

Well considering it is considered possession of an illegal substance or controlled substance. Having it without authorization is citation worthy and having a citation like that going into a field like pharmacy could kill your career.

Yeah this question has come up a lot. Ahem cough cough but never by me directly 🙂 I really don't know what the consensus is here about how serious it could be but its obviously not good. Anything like this on your record that could allude to chemical abuse (even if it isn't true and it was just one slip up) could look bad. Try not to do anything too stupid when you go out.

This is going to different very widely based on what school you're looking at.

With that being said, most morally just institutions, regardless of the field, understand the possibility of human screwups. Unfortunately, other than owning up to your mistakes, the only thing that can help any situation such as drug or alcohol abuse is to put some time between the event and the day it's revealed.

To put it into terms easier to swallow... it's not too hard for someone who got a DUI 10 years ago to get a job as a cop. It's pretty damn hard for someone who got a DUI last month to get one though.

Admissions is going to prove very similar. The best thing you could do is acknowledge it and show that you've matured from it... which you have, if you're owning up to it and looking to resolve it.

I saw someone on here earlier post that they went to an alcohol awareness class after their citation.. that's pretty good form, something to consider.

I was just wondering about this.

I haven't actually gotten caught .. yet?!

But, I don't smoke pot anyways. :luck:

Either way, the fall semester of college is looming and I was just wondering.

define "citation."

Letter from the school and you get assigned community service? You should be fine.

Arrest, charges, and conviction in a court of law? Mmmm...different story.

Depends how it's recorded on "official" documents (ie criminal record, academic transcript). If it's not recorded in any officially recognized document, it never happened. Like I said in the other thread, it's like a parking ticket.

What degree of underage drinking are you referring to? There is several different degrees you could have got.

Chances are even if you got arrested and charged you'll still be fine. You would need to pay a lawyer to plea you a suspended sentence, which is the norm for any minor drug/alcohol charge. All you have to do is stay clean for the time you are on probation and you will never technically be charged, basically the charges would be dropped. Therefore when you have a background check nothing will come up, and if you get asked "Have you ever been charged with any crimes?," you can honestly say "No.". This is second hand knowledge of course. Might be a different story if you're in pharmacy school. Moral of the story......misdemeanors are fine (not fine, but redeemable), felonies are not!

Depends on your definition of 'dropped.' Many people believe that nolle prosequi means 'gotten rid of' but it doesn't. If your charges were nolle prosequi'd it simply means they're put on hold. If you don't mess up for, again in my state, about 5 years they go away entirely. Otherwise, if you mess up during that time, they're brought back up along with the new charges you face.

You'd need to be sure which is the case. Also, you should know that not guilty verdicts do show up on a criminal history report.. at least in my state. You do have the option to expunge your record after X amount of time (contact a lawyer) which would remove it entirely.

As I said in the other thread on here about the same topic.. expose what you're asked to expose and don't expose what you're not required to expose. Don't set yourself up for being taken as hiding something.. if you think they want to know, tell them. If it doesn't seem like they care, don't worry about it, and address it when/if it becomes an issue.

If found guilty of marijuana possession, you'll loose all federal financial aid for a period of time.
