I am having difficulty actually committing to withdraw from some of my schools.

I got into SUNY Stony Brook and was pretty sure I wanted to withdraw from some schools, but now that I am actually about to do it, it all seems too definite. :scared:
So I am asking the help of SDN.

I am thinking of withdrawing from:
1. NY Medical College (interview scheduled for 1.28)
2. Rosalind Franklin ("passed initial screening" on 11.15, but nothing more)
3. SUNY Upstate (pre-interview hold 10.21)
4. SUNY Buffalo (top of wait-list)

Does anyone have any info on any of these schools that might make me want to keep them around for a little longer? Or should i go ahead and do the right thing? 😳

Much thanks in advance.

Any comments on MDApps would also be much appreciated! 🙂

There's no reason to withdraw from a school pre-acceptance if you've already paid, unless you're totally uninterested in the school.

I know plenty of people who were blown away by a school when they went to interview there, when they were unenthusiastic before.

If you've interviewed at a school and know you'd rather go to the school you're accepted at than this school, withdraw and give somebody else the potential acceptance. If you're unsure (though be honest with yourself--don't hang onto the acceptance just because it feels good) then wait for financial packages to come out and compete them against one another.

Edit: I guess the only other reason would be to save money on travelling for interviews.

If you want to save money and wouldn't go to NYMC over StonyBrook then withdraw from that school. But for the rest, just wait and see if they materialize into an interview or acceptance.

I sent off my withdrawal letter yesterday; coming to the conclusion was a little weird at first, but it felt better and better as time went on.

Withdraw from them if you KNOW you don't want to go.

After I got accepted to GWU last year I wanted to save money on traveling and stop traveling. So I withdrew from a BUNCH of schools. It was hard because I was still a little freaked out that something would go wrong. But I just called GWU to make sure they had my deposit and wouldn't need anything else. And then I withdrew from the schools. Its a little hard at first but if you know you don't want to go just do it - save the school time and save yourself time and money.

I would consider SUNY Buffalo and Upstate but definitely with draw from the others.

No way I would withdraw unless my acceptance was from my top choice.

I agree- it is so hard! I know it is selfish, but it is hard to picture the one person you help by releasing a spot when there are so many applicants out there. I have three that i can't let go of- I am afraid I will meet some one who goes to the school and they will tell me all this wonderful stuff and I will want to change my mind and it will be too late.

Well then don't withdraw. You should only withdraw if you're really really sure that you don't want to go there. Keep them - don't feel selfish. You're justified. Until May 15th at least 😛

The only reason it would be selfish is if you know you won't go to the school but you keep going to interviews just to show how many acceptances you can wrack up (knew someone who did this - got into an in-state fairly early and no way wanted to go out of state over that. Still went to a bunch of interviews because he was convinced he could get x acceptances. Huge insecure ass.)

So as long as you're not doing that - you're fine.

i think im just getting lazy. I dont want to go to any more interviews except some of my top choices (i know i sound like an @ss, so i apologize to ppl who are still waiting; i am not trying to be obnoxious 🙁)

Stony is somewhere I am definitely considering and I can't see myself at the other ones. But I do not know too much about the other schools and am afraid I will hear something good about them as soon as a withdraw.

I think i'll withdraw from NYMC for now, since I have an interview there. And I will wait on the others.

Thanks for the comments!

you should heavily research your schools......rank them, and then withdraw from all schools which are far below your current acceptance.

I thought the GWU deposit isn't due till May? ::sudden paranoia:: haha

I still think it's much harder not to have any good news from any school.

There was a $100 deposit due within 2 weeks of acceptance last year. Then the rest of the 3000 due sometime in June.

Maybe they changed it this year.

I have another slightly related question if anyone can help out. If schools really get to see where you have applied and been accepted in mid March, is it in an applicant's best interest to accept everything that comes their way and not withdraw from any until near May? For example if you withdraw from a school you are unsure about it will appear as if you were never accepted. Do any schools actually consider where else you have been accepted in making their decisions?

No, because not all schools can see it.

Starting in mid-March all the schools that have accepted you can see where else you've been accepted.

So no, it doesn't help you get accepted to other schools since they can't see where else you've been accepted until they accept you.

thanks everyone.
I just withdrew from NYMC and Upstate.
So hard pressing the "send" button.

I think I'll wait on the others for now 😳

It just depends on how you evaluate the schools on your list, which isn't necessarily only about rankings. I sort of have a Mel Kiper style big-board on Excel where I have my schools ranked, and their ranks change as I find out more information and/or am under consideration.

After getting an acceptance from one of my top choices, I withdrew from all the schools that were sufficiently down the chain that I wouldn't want to take the time/money to interview at, which was shocking to some people but ultimately it's all about where you personally want to wind up. I'm content to wait it out till spring without any more interviews unless they are from the top ten schools remaining on my list that I haven't visited.

Oh man, I thought I was the only one that did this. Glad to see I'm not alone! hehe
