So, I took step 3 last weekend and I feel like I totally bombed it. I am pretty sure that I killed one of my CCS patients and totally did not know the diagnosis on another. There was SO much OB/Gyn and Peds....

For those of you that have passed Step 3, did you feel the same way. I feel like I am taking crazy pills as I got >250 on both Step 1 and 2 but I studied a lot more for those. Being a surgical resident didn't let me study as much as I wanted. Anyone else feel this way or with similar experiences feel like they bombed and it was ok. I am panicking now.....

Thanks and sorry for the neurotic, whiney question....

You probably won't fail. Based on reading this board, the people who did well were the people who thought they bombed the test, and the people who did worse were the ones who thought they did well. Not exactly sure what that means.

Absolutely thought I failed it after I took it. I'm not in a specialty that cares about Step 3 for anything other than passing, so that was my goal. Turned out just fine after 4 weeks of reduced sleep thinking I was going to have to study for the thing all over.

I took it Monday and yesterday, and I found it to be on the same level as Step 1 and Step 2 CK - definitely not easier as some people try to suggest.

I studied off and on for about two months (while working both months), did 1100 USMLE World questions, and ran through the explanations to the 52 UWorld cases. I reviewed the learning objectives at the bottom of each MCQ in the few days leading up to my exam.

With that said, I felt like I made educated guesses on about half of the questions on the real exam. I was so tired the latter half of the first day that I was happy just to look at all of the questions and attempt an answer. I felt like I had more derm than I should've.

Oh, and I'm an internal medicine resident nearing the end of my intern year. I was getting in the low 50% range correct on the questions, but I thoroughly read each explanation and highlighted important stuff. Others I've talked to who were scoring the same passed with no problem (which is exactly what I am trying to do).

Your chance of failing are zero if you read each question and made an educated guess if you had to. To drop by 50+ points is unheard of.

I was in the exact same shoes as you. Surgical subspecialty intern. Didn't study much... Previous Step exams in the 250+ range. Walked out of the thing feeling certain that I had failed. 2 of my CCS cases were complete disasters - I treated someone with RIPE therapy who had f&^#%&@ lung cancer.... 'nuff said.

Passed easily with a 230. You will be fine.

I was in the same boat. Studied for about 4 weeks on&off (about 7 hours a week). Did all the USMLEWorld Q's and cases once and read part of Kaplan MTB book. Totally thought I failed the test. I felt like I was guessing on more than half of the questions. Although I was really lucky in that my clinical cases were almost exactly like world. Ended up passing with a 94! If I had put the same effort in step 1 or even 2, I would have been doomed!!!

In the end of the day, don't worry about it. You can't predict how well you did on Step3. Just go on with your life and worry about it when the results are published.

If you don't mind me asking Plastics13, how did you end up doing?? I just finished the exam yesterday and feel the same way you felt. 🙁 I scored in 250's-260's on step 1 and 2 also. Will report back when I get my score back.

everybody feels like bombing that test, it is so unpredictable and you cant tell if you answered all the questions right.
