This is 1/2 of the jars that i have out there all combined. Still have 2 oral surgeon group practices collecting and 2 general dentists. This is from 5 oral surgery offices over the course of about 3.5 months. I'm guessing i have close to 175 or so (not sure how many are true virgin and noncarious however). Lots of molars as expected still hunting anteriors 😉

Lol and thats backflushed SEVERAL times with 10% Bleach. Some jars were bloody red and smelled horrid when i opened them 😱 I work in a biology lab so of course i wore gloves and a mask and worked in a safety hood when handling them.

I now have this mental image of Dr. Tacoelf, dressed in a Class A encapsulated biohazard suit (an "Outbreak" suit) going into a dental office and saying "Hi, I'm here to pick up the teeth."

Dr. Elf, that is an impressive tooth collection, you can make yourself a necklace with the leftovers  .

btw, how do you paste a picture into a message like in your original post?

Thanks.

I hosted the picture on my ftp site (mindspring webhosting) and then just used image tags

Anyone know what teeth will cost to buy from the school? I mean, I can collect a load of teeth over the summer but if I can just buy them for $50 I think I'll just fork over the cash.

Schools don't sell real teeth. Here's my advice from dental school: Put out as many jars in as many different offices as you can. I say "different" because each practice is different...some only take out 3rd molars (useless in dental school) while others only take out easy anterior teeth. Also, I wouldn't only use oral surgeons because these are going to be mainly 3rd molars. If that jar is from an oral surgeons, most of the teeth in that jar you will never be usable because 3rd molars are useless. Nevertheless, I would still have some jars at some oral surgery offices.

I would also find some general dentists who do their own routine extractions because that's where you will get your anterior teeth from.

Just my 2 cents.

Didnt want to say anything...but since you just did...I thought I would add some of my own opinions. TacoElf, good job but after showing my dad the collection of teeth (we were in the same room) he mentioned that about 75-80% of your teeth are going to be (or from what he he could see, ARE) 3rd molars which as mentioned above by toofache are useless.

Personally, after asking my dad to start collecting he recommended oral surgeons. He mentioned the problem about mostly pulling 3rd molars, but also said they do pull anteriors for orthodontic purposes and periodontal problems and these anteriors are usually in good shape. I have gone to 3-4 oral surgeons so far and am going to go to 3-4 more near dad's office. IUSD starts in one month, so hopefully I get a decent amount....but from what I hear we dont need them until 2nd semester so I might leave them there until December/January.

Anyway, good luck sorting through your jar and make sure not to keep the carious and/or restored teeth and most importantly make sure to tell your friends that see the jar that you dont have a tooth fetish

Is everyone using a 1:10 mixture of bleach to water for their tooth stash? I think I read that somewhere in UF's directions for tooth storage, just wondering if anyone had a better method

no, loma linda wants us to disinfect the outside the jars with the bleach:water solution first, then the teeth are stashed in chlorohexidine solution (also known as mouth wash). but i guess it dont matter

About 45% are 3rds from what i've looked at. One oral surgery practice gave me all anteriors (they did lots of dentures and another one gave me a good mix). I picked oral surgeons because i need about 160 teeth total (60 of which need to be mint condition for endo). I would never able to get that number in a resonable ammount of time (6-7 months) from general dentists alone. Anyway yeah I definitely have more molars than i want but thats the name of the game.

However since endo is 2nd year i think i'm gonan place more jars around town at the practice that gave me mostly anterior.

You will be better off if you can get way more than 160 teeth. The more the better. I had 3 one-gallon jars filled to the brim with teeth, then I could really pick the best teeth. The key to a good grade is choosing the right tooth, regardless of how good you are.

Yeah thats what i figured 😀

I gave the local oral surgeon a huge jar to collect teeth for me and he phoned me in about 3 weeks and said I had to collect it because every time they opened the jar the patients and his staff would vomit. Use 1/3 bleach and 2 or more smaller jars................lol

be careful about using too much bleach it can damage the teeth from what i've read. It would suck to have 100 beauties ruined :scared:

Excess bleach causes the teeth to be overly brittle...BAD.

okay, why is everyone collecting teeth??

Some schools require teeth collected before D1.

Your first and second years (before they turn you loose on live patients) you will use these to learn to cut cavity preps and then do the fillings. You'll also use them in endodontics to learn root canals.

Agreed. What students really seem to be lacking are anteriors and premolars. If you get enough molars you can trade around for some of those though.

Does NOVA require it too?
they do, but they didnt specify how many. In the packet of info they sent the asked for teeth with "minimal or no decay and with no dental restorations(filings)."

While I understand why you're doing it that image nonetheless has a gross fascination factor for me - eesh, now I have visions of middle-aged bald men burying something large in the backyard to a Susan Vega tune....creepy indeed.

I love how you put up the marker next to the jar to show the reference scale of how large the jar is . BRILLIANT !

How did you go about collecting the teeth? Do you just go to the dental office and ask them? Do you specifically seek oral surgeons, or endodontist? Or do you just ask and dentist? Are they usually receptive to your request, considering how busy they can be.

^^^A polite phone call will suffice.

I had my teeth cleaned today and I brought a "tooth jar" with me to the appointment. My dentist said he would be happy to collect teeth for me. I'll take another one to the OMS that extracted my wisdoms.

I know it's good to be prepared but at the same time, I'm tempted to say "nerdy" for some reason.

You would prefer something else next to the jar...? Nevermind.

Your jar full of teeth in solution has grossed me out and twisted my stomach 😀 Now, I can't even eat my lunch anymore 'cause I have this mental image of your bottle  :barf: 😳
