for a tattoo. Sorry if im posting this in the wrong area i'm not sure where it would fit otherwise.

But im sure alot of you have seen the praying hands holding the rosary beads between them. I was thinking about getting the praying hands down to the wrist and adding sort of Dress shirt cuffs to them then putting a Caduceus so it is kind of poking three quarters of the way out of the cuff so it looks like its tattooed on the hand then replacing the Rosary Beads with a stethoscope. i dunno i just kinda wanted to get some feedback as to what you guys think about it.

also my apologies again if i put this in the wrong area on the site. I look forward to hearing what you guys gotta say.

Don't know why you'd want Caduceus; it's not really the symbol of medicine.

Ask your friends and family this question, not a forum.

Please, don't.

What a horrible idea. The skin is too permanent to have any sort of picture on it. Whatever symbolism you're thinking of just sounds tacky.

well then. i'm not gonna get a tattoo and instead go drown myself in a bathtub full of bleach thanks for the inspiration.

eh oh well. what is the universal symbol of medicine?

This is why I said to go ask your friends and family and not people on here. Nobody on here is going to be receptive about this. They don't know you, they don't your history or your personality. This is too personal for internet forums. Despite their popularity tattoos are almost always controversial.

and c/o Wikipedia:

The caduceus is sometimes erroneously used as a symbol for medicine, especially in North America, due to confusion with the traditional medical symbol, the rod of Asclepius, which has only a single snake and no wings.

i was gonna tattoo MD (or DO) on my chest. one letter on each side. or you could lebron it out if you have the Tri's

haha that sounds like a plan. and thanks to you aggie for clearing up the discrepancies lol i guess i'll go talk to someone i know personally.

thanks a ton.

what happens if for some reason you don't get into med school or become a doctor for that matter? Laser treatment for taking tattoos off is pretty damn expensive.

hmmm good point omni. i think in that case instead of laser treatments i would replace the stethoscope with a dead kitten and the hand tat with a picture of a me giving a middle finger.

nahhhh not really im just throwing ideas out there.

a) a couple of the nay sayers probably don't like the idea of tattoos period, me included.
b) medicine is a career, not your life. I would not get something job related tattooed. If you were to come on and say you wanted to have your daughters name tattooed or something like that, I think people would be more receptive.
c) would this be your first tat? I suggest taking a Sharpie, and having a friend draw it on you. You may like it more, you may decide after the week, you're tired of it.
d) if you get it, make sure it's in a proper place. right or wrong, tats can/are viewed as unprofessional, so make sure it will be covered when you're working.

thanks for that man and yea i understand how a topic such as this could be controversial. and nah i already have 2 and they're both in places i can easily cover up.

thanks for your time though i appreciate it

One guy got a tattoo w/ my name on his hand....

Is your actually name Yudid? I would just add an o in between the Y and the U and then add some words after that to turn that into an insightful sentence.

No it is not my actual name 😉 Yudid is the acronym of my first middle and last name 🙂

That would make for an interesting interview...

"Ya see? Ya see? I am dedicated to medicine!"

haha yea.

now if you dont accept me to your school you are a hypocrite.

lol

Interviewer: I just don't believe that you have a solid passion for medicine.

Dawsonkw: No! Look! (stands up, takes off shirt and flexes bicep) I can make the snakes move too!

That just made me laugh so hard that i fell out of my chair.

no really i fell three feet off a stool to solid tile.

man that kinda hurt...

You gonna get old and that tattoo is going to be ugly....

Don't listen to these people. I think it sounds like a great idea. Once you get it, please post pictures here.

Is there any way you can incorporate PacMan into the tattoo? That would be so awesome.

Again, pics please.

haha not only will i incorporate Pacman but also Miss Pacman, Frogger, Donkey Kong and princess zelda's hair.

I'm not a huge fan of tattoo's myself, but I don't knock people for getting them. I do think that anytime you get on on the forearms, wrist, or hands you are asking to be discriminated against. It might seem wrong, but some conservatives unknowingly will discriminate against you, making some jobs or opportunities unavailable to you that you might have otherwise been qualified for.

If you are going go get tattoos try to get them where shorts and a short sleeve shirt can cover them, at least mostly cover them.

This guys has M.D. tatted on his back.

Yea...cause you know, everything else about your body will only get more gorgeous with age, only that tattoo will get all wrinkly.

👍

Worst idea ever.

I could come up with much worse.

medicine is your life, not just a career
👍 😉

great tattoo idea, I think. If its really you, go for it.

Your status says your pre-med. I would say at least wait until you get into medical school.

yea insane i was gonna wait till i get to med school.

and instead of the caduceus i might get the words "bitch im a doctor"

or "you can trust me... Im a Doctor"

hahaha thanks guys if i had a camera i would post the ones i have on here or in my profile or something.

Your status says your pre-med. I would say at least wait until you get into medical school.

I would wait tell finishing internship at least. It would be sad to have medical tat and not ever had practiced.

i think there's a typo in your title. you put cool instead of lame. 😉

Hey I think peeps can get tatted what ever they want. I'll be there later in their life to laser it off.

On a related note, I was thinking of getting "Do no harm." tattooed on my forehead with a stethoscope next to it. Does that sound wise?

For you I don't think it would make a difference either way...

A nurse from England was on duty in the emergency department, when a punk rocker entered.

This young woman had purple hair styled into a mohawk, a variety of tattoos and strange clothing.

It was determined that the patient had acute appendicitis and was scheduled for immediate surgery.

When she was completely disrobed on the operating table, the staff found that her pubic hair had been dyed green and above it was a tattoo reading: 'keep off the grass.'

After the prep and the surgery, the surgeon added a small note to the dressing which said: "Sorry, had to mow the lawn."

I can't say I agree with this. I have several tattoos, every one of which depicts or symbolizes something that is a part of who I am. I served in the Marine Corps, I have a USMC tattoo. My military background is part of who I am today, just as my passion for medicine is a big part of who I am, as it is a part of a lot of people who got into this profession for the right reasons. If it is something that you are passionate about and that means something to you, I say go for it.

A tatoo is going overboard, but I think stapling your med student ID to your forehead will do the trick.

This may be true, but it's widely recognized as the symbol now. And actually has an interesting history.
Plus, for a tattoo, it's much nicer looking than the rod of asclepius.

For what it's worth, I think some of the posters here are being too harsh. I actually have a cadeucus tattoo on my shoulder. I got it about 3 years ago and love it. It's kept me motivated, and it just looks cool. Just make sure any tattoo you get has meaning to you, and know that there will always be people who tell you it's dumb if they don't understand it.

I completely agree. I think it is tacky for anyone who hasn't actually done something to have any sort of symbolism for the thing they haven't really done. Makes you seem fake and shallow. (now if the tattoo means something besides "I want to be a doctor" I might thing differently but this idea just seems tacky)

Other big pet peeve I have is vanity plates. I hate them when they are about something you have done but I hate them even more if they are about something that you want to so. Example: I once saw a car with plates (I forgot the exact phrasing) that basically said PreMed. It was the dumbest thing I have ever seen.

I have nothing against tattoos that actually mean something though. (examples include marines getting marine related tattoos, doctors getting doctor related tattoos, religious people getting religious tattoos, ice cream vendors getting ice cream related tattoos, etc) Once you are actually a doctor if you still want this tattoo I say go for it. I'm even ok with ones that are just because the person thought it looked cool.

haha.. so is the entire AAMC mistaken?

Most things that seem to be cool when you're 19 (like tatoos) end up being REALLY lame when you're 40.
