So it is July 6, if you are around REL....

So it is July 6, anyone have any info on AMCAS?

And as advertised AMCAS has sent data to the schools who desired to received data on a near-real-time basis. As of noon today we had 474 applications of which 272 were verified. The kicker is that AMCAS has requested that no schools work with the data until July 7 to complete extensive system data checks. So it will be tomorrow when secondaries etc can begin to fly, at least from USF. Some schools work on a weekly download and not NRT, if that is the case some schools will get data at a later time.

Does that mean rejections can come as early as next week? I just wondering how much or little they look at your primaries prior to making a decision.

Thank you so much for the info REL. AMCAS lied to us!!! Must sue them for emotional distress

Probably no outright rejections for awhile unless you simply do not meet the stated requirements for each program. If the requirement is 3.25 GPA and you present with a 2.8, there is a chance of a "preliminary rejection," tho as admissions folk we dont like to use the "R" word --- and you dont want to hear it!

AMCAS screwed up while verifying my application and didn't calculate my GPA or anything....so I had to submit an academic change request to get it fixed. When I called AMCAS, they said that this wouldn't delay anything because med schools won't start downloading applications until mid-July. Is this true? Do they only receive preliminary information on July 6th? Like just names and addresses to send secondaries, or can they see the whole application on July 6th? I'm just worried that if they can see my whole application on July 6th, they aren't going to see a calculated GPA. Will this delay things?

I know that this is disturbing to you and of great concern but it shouldnt be a hindrance to you as far as interview selection goes. Medical schools generally begin interviewing in late September or October so there is plenty of time for your application to be considered once verified. July/August are times to get all of the rest of the secondary applications completed and to build an applicant pool for interview selection. The Lord will never put more on you than you can bear --- tho sometimes we wonder dont we?

Well, it's very good to hear that it shouldn't delay my application. It actually has been verified, but just incorrectly since my GPA has not been calculated. I received an email on Friday, July 1st that processing was complete. However, when I view my application, my courses have been verified, but my GPA has not been calculated. Thus, AMCAS told me to submit an academic change request for my GPA to be calculated. What I'm wondering is if med schools will still be able to download my application before AMCAS fixes it, so I will be able to receive secondaries in the meantime. ..........or will med schools not be able to download my application until my academic change request has been addressed.

Schools that request information on a near-real-time basis will download the data and note the missing data. AMCAS is good about corrections and send correction notices to med programs to ensure all bases are covered.

Ok - I guess I'll just have to submit my med school application at USF. All these years of force training for nothing. At least I have my two master's degrees.

That's the spirit! I am sure that with an early application and the force on your side things will turn out well. (Hint: Princess Leigh outfits are out this year for interviews).

Since I'm a guy, I don't think the Princess Leia outfit will be a problem. Now, Obi Wan Kenobi...

Rel - can I ask you a question? Feel free to not respond as this is sort of off topic but something that I would like to hear come from an adcom members mouth. Do institutional actions on your amcas matter? If they are for something such as drinking underage or getting a noise violation off campus? There has been much speculation as to what this does to an application. Whether it impacts it or not. Obviously serious offenses like honor code violations would but what about things that I mentioned. I echo everyone's sentiments when I say how great it is to have someone who actually knows what is going on, on this board. Thank you.

In general the institutional actions fall under the heading of "young & foolish" in college -- dorm drinking, violations etc. As long as they are a not a part of a continuing trend and you acknowledged the "wrong" you should be fine in most instances. There are those who have goofy felony records that get into med school -- breaking and entering, stealing golf carts and zipping along on the greens & fairways, etc. As long as there is no trend, and probably no "hard crimes" you shouldnt suffer much, if any disadvantage.

Bwella,

I always say it, REL is one of the greatest adcoms that you'll get to know. If nothing else goes right on interview day, I've always heard that the one thing that did go right was that REL was always there to help the students feel comfortable. In other words, ever person that has met him or talked to him through email or phone or any other way has always had great things to say about him. My own experiences have been quite positive since he is very direct and very quick with his responses.

If you ever have specific questions related to your particular situation and applying to USF med school, you can either PM him through here on SDN or send him a email. His email address is on the USF website. I'll pm it to you if you want.

Also, Dr. Williams who is one of the permanent adcom members and biochem professor for the MS1 students is very helpful too.

I can give you his email address.

A few months ago, Dr. Hinkley of UMiami also posted on here. But he only posted for purposes of something related to the waitlist situation at Miami at the moment. However, I've met him a few times at med school forums and he's seemed like if you approach him, he'll be as equally helpful as REL is with USF. He was really nice and when I met him, he was really funny. His presentations are awesome because they are direct in the way they rank people etc.

He posted under Robert Hinkley, but I think if you are going to try to get a hold of him it is probably better to look on UMiami's page and find his email address through the admissions email address they give.

For UF, Robyn Sheppard will provide the best info to specific questions and for FSU, don't really know who's in charge there.

But seriously, as far as USF goes........REL's really helpful and insightful.

This conversation between you and bwells in cracking me up.

P.S. Bwells,

Sorry for getting your name wrong in my post above this one. I think I read it wrong, (I was reading too fast), and wrote Bwella.

I'm too lazy to go and change it right now, so I thought I'd just apologize before hand. I've had a tendency to read too fast when it comes to usernames and hence, I've got a few names off in the past. I think I just did that with yours by accident.

hahahahaha

Boredom at its best. Actually, I've not had much going on whole summer outside of HPLCs once a week at the research lab and volunteering once a week at the VA next door to USF COM. Oh and I have a couple of classes that don't seem to require much work.

So I've been bored out of my mind and been spending wayyyyyyyyyyyy mooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeee time on SDN then I have in the past.

Although, I never have a problem with giving my two cents of advice. So its no problem. But yah............moving on. :meanie: :meanie:

Wanted to add one more thing......

I've not reached the 10 thousand post mark yet to make me a total SDN junkie. But I do admit to an SDN addiction. Maybe I need to start going to SDN anonymous meetings 😉. :meanie:

REL,

I have a med school application question for you. I applied really late last year (around mid-December) because I was waiting on a letter of rec. I got a few interviews but didn't get in anywhere. In fact, I was told by the chairman of admissions at one of the schools that I would have been accepted instead of being waitlisted had I applied a few months earlier. My question is, am I likely to get interviews at these schools again since I did last year and since my application has improved since 2005?

I really want to stay in Florida and going to med school at USF or UF would be ideal for me.

Was she doing EDP?? Or was it some sort of special program like the BA/MD program you are part of?? Or was it just regular admissions?? That's good for her if she has gotten an interview.

Oh ok. That makes a lot more sense now. It makes more sense that she got the invite today because today's the day schools were allowed to see apps. It also makes more sense that she got a response so early now that you mention she was a EDP applicant. Wonder if MochaMD heard anything. She was trying to do EDP at NJMS too. She posted on here some time back. I wish her good luck with getting EDP at NJMS too. Congrats to your friend.

Everytime ASDIC tells me about NJMS, it reminds me of USF in terms of the way he describes the atmosphere and program.

Definitely sounds like a really good school. Good luck next year when you start med school too.

If you got interviews last year, and improved your application over the last several months, you would probably get interviewed at the same programs again. Work with them, let them know you are motivated.

Thanks for all of your great advice REL. It is nice to have someone who knows what their talking about weigh in on our questions 🙂 After looking over my AMCAS application five million times, I sent it in, and now realize that I made two typos on it. There are nothing major but I was wondering if that was a big deal or am I being totally neurotic? Thanx.

I can tell you that I made a few typos in my personal statement last year (I noticed them a few days after I submitted my AMCAS) and I still got interviews. Unless it's something major - like you wrote in something funny and personal and forgot to take it out (ex: you have a sentence that says "Derp! I want to be a doctor! Derp!") - then you should be fine.
