setting aside all the silverback like chest beating on the previous thread, what then is the consensus on choosing Anaes or Rad Onc as a career option if one can find just as many intellectual reasons to get into both fields, from a practical stand point, what are the pros and cons of being in "business" in both fields?

lets assume that they're equally as competitve to get into.

as I was saying previously it appears that anaesthesia is a more broadly applicable specialty, where as rad onc would subsist in an esoteric niche...but you have the benefit of providing therapy, and more independence from surgeons?

thoughts appreciated!

Guess it comes down to what you like more.

I believe you'll still be a consultant in rad-onc, albeit to another set of physicians.

I hate night call. I'll bet rad-onc has less night call (if any) than anesthesia.

As far as I can tell, there isn't really such a thing as a radiologic oncology emergency. 🙂 Hence, I am guessing most Rad Oncs spend their nights safely tucked away in their beds. Those tumors aren't going to kill your patients before you can get in to the clinic the next day.

OP, if you have the brain for the mind-numbingly complex physics that go into radiation oncology procedures, then I say go for that. I would not be interested in that at ALL.

Another thing to consider, though, is the future stability of the profession. Anesthesiology's stability has been discussed ad nauseum here on the forum, so I won't bother to go into that. I don't know anything about security in the Rad Onc field, though. If I had to guess, I would venture that some of the new chemotherapy drugs that will be coming out in the near future (that will specifically target tumor cells instead of attacking every dividing cell in the body) will probably reduce the need for radiation treatment at some point. I haven't heard about any drug companies developing the "perfect anesthetic" that requires no peri-operative monitoring of the patient as of yet.

Yep, I'm deserving of that description.

Apologies for descending into troll-control.

Just dont understand why people come to this thread with obvious adverserial intent, and I've always felt the need to fire counterstrikes.

Whats your opinions?

Should we counterstrike, or hit the ignore button?

As of current day, I'm not good at hitting the ignore button.

Maybe I should reconsider my strategy, since I'm the only one out of my attending colleagues (mil, ut, noyac) that gets into these pissing matches with trolls.

Ignore, for sure. If some med student argued with you like that in the hospital, would you take them seriously or just bitch-slap them? 🙂

you know, some of it has been entertaining but I think its good of you Jet to get into it a little. when trolls come and stir the pot, its good that someone calls them out.

by the way, who did we figure out misterioso to be? mountaindew? I didn't pay close attention to the holiday flame wars, but that name sounds right.

jetprop would talk his way out of it because he's proven himself to be just that: all talk.

Remember, in another thread jetprop challenged me and compared himself to Matt Hughes (for those who don't know, Hughes is an awesome UFC fighter) and when I accepted and called his bluff he folded right away and started backpeddling.

Watch him continue to backpeddle instead of accepting the challenge that he himself made...

Jetprop used the UFC as an analogy. He is an attending Anesthesiologist. Not someone so juvenile to start a fist fight over a forum. Something obviously lost on your part.

I wonder when the mods will wake up and ban you over your blatantly hostile threadjacking.

Who said anything about a "fist fight"? Obviously you don't know anything about MMA. People from all walks of life are involved in it: even attending physicians. By the way here's one of his quotes directed at me:

I'm replying to previous posts already on this thread, so if anything it is them who did the "threadjacking".

I can't believe I'm wasting my time on this tw*t, but "misterioso" is one of those jackasses who sits in front of the computer screen all day with a bag of cheetos and a zima. His reality is all digital. His lack of friends allows him lots of time at home to play on the computer and read comic books. He will of course refute all of this by replying with stories about his popularity among his classmates, but it isn't too difficult to see the truth when reading his posts.
