You can log into the NMS match and see available positions in the post match. Alternatively, you could look at the 2017 AOA programs match data on, I think, the AOA site. That will show you the programs, how many spots offered, how many filled in the match, etc.

There's not really a ton other than FM, IM, and TRIs. Handfuls of a few other fields (5 out less each).

There's usually a lot of TRIs left over, and it seems there are plenty this year, but who knows by Thurs.

Hopefully you won't have to worry about this, but if you don't get anything by Thurs, contact as many programs as you can. I would also reach out to your school, and absolutely contact (and if possible have someone from your school contact on your behalf) any unfilled program in your school's OPTI.

Dude, this is almost 3 years old and went nowhere. What's the point of posting this in this thread, especially since this thread contains mostly IMGs in a rough spot? Seems pointless and in poor taste.

Contact and have your program contact open AOA spots if you're in that situation.

Make sure you submit a tax return for this year. Assuming your income was zero in 2016, you can sign up for income based payments and save for upcoming payments. You can also defer payments for a period. I don't know the details though, so I would talk to your financial aid office.

TRIs exist. A lot of DOs don't make it in the SOAP (something like 75% of them), so many end up scrambling into either an AOA categorical or TRI position. I would look into them now, and make a list of programs you want to contact right away on Thurs of the SOAP doesn't work out.

Yes, but on the MD side it sounds like this was horrible last year.

A lot of DOs don't match in the NRMP match. ~600 out of ~3000 last year. It's not a small number, so a lot of people need to scramble into AOA spots. In the future, people are really going to have to adjust how they apply so that they have more backups built in, because in a few years it'll be only the match and SOAP.

Good luck, I hope it works out either through the SOAP or scramble. At this point scrambling into AOA FM or IM is a good deal, because you will finish in 3 years and be in a good spot even if your program doesn't make it through the transition.

Rubbing salt on a wound without giving any beneficial advice regarding their question. Yeah this is absolutely in poor taste.

There are more applicants than spots. On top of that, people have redflags or they really just apply/rank unrealistically. Some people just had bad luck. It's guaranteed that some people are going to be unmatched by the end of it.

Just out of curiosity, how many programs did you apply to, and did you have your SLOEs in?

I know a few DOs in your position that scrambled into TRIs, reapplied the next year and matched ACGME EM. Unfortunately, EM seems to be getting tougher lately.

^ AOA TRI and matched ACGME EM? If that is the case, how did they get SLOEs during PGY-1 year or do away rotations?

Matched advanced but no prelim. When do you have to secure a prelim year by in order to keep an advanced position? If I am undecided on where I want to be could I just sit SOAP out and just pick at what's left in a few weeks?

They had some SLOEs already. Usually you can do 1 away month during a TRI. It varies though. Also, some people have done 2wks and 2wks (so 2 aways). Others use part of their vacation, but that is tough, because usually people use that for time off for interviews.

Obviously its not ideal for anyone to be applying for residency during intern year, but people do it and for some it works out.

To be clear: they obviously did PGY1 again at their cat EM program. Thought it was obviously, but realized others might get confused.

Also, obviously you don't have to do aways at every EM program. It's not like the AOA. It helps, but if you have a good SLOE from an away at a well known/respected EM program, I imagine that goes a long way.

Great post thxleave. I would give it 5 stars if you posted it 24 hours from now before rd 3.

Most still will take any position in a heartbeat since rd 1 has not occurred yet. . But wow, interesting take. I thought I thought of everything but apparently not.

I became a doctor then did something else. Kinda like you. Now I want to be a doctor.

It's a funny thing the whole grass is greener concept. I've been on both lawns and they both have advantages and disadvantages. It took me a while to realize which is greener and that is simply a choice one can only make on their own.

Hey, if you guys are thinking about leaving medicine.... It's possible if you are willing to settle for lower compensation + PSLF + PTO. A lot of state governments have self-funded insurance. They have departments filled with MAs/Cphts and would be more then happy to take a MD with no residency as an analyst. These departments also have medical consultants, but you won't be able to get these positions without board certification (you won't be list eligible). Though the salary difference isn't that much due to how the union is so strong for some of these states (minimum starting salary is hugely different, but maximum salary isn't a huge spread), the nursing consultant makes more then the pharmacy consultants for some departments.

1) Health appeals - You won't be able to do medical reviews, but you can handle evidence of coverage ones. Stuff like out of network anesthesiologist, or if a stolen C-PAP should be reimbursed. Or stuff like if a fertility drug should be covered for the member due to their HIPAA condition.
2) Formulary review - Stuff like if Synthroid should be covered or not. Should generic Glumetza be covered, while the generic Glucophage is so much cheaper?
3) Working with pharmacy benefit management with the state. To help design health out comes. Ensuring your members are discharged for example with the necessary medications after a MI. Or establishing home infusion to save money and improve patient outcomes.
4) Medicare Part B vs Medicare Part D

Not going to huge depth. As there isn't too many MDs working for the local state government for that sweet sweet PSLF (my story stands out easily). If you have all federal loans, think about it. Financially it works out pretty well once you break above 300k in student loans. As remember the principal and interest is forgiven. Pension is also pretty sweet (unless you in Michigian, your pension isn't protected and it was slashed recently). EX: 300k with ~7% interest! It's almost like 50-60k taxable income needed per year. Plus that your state worker salary and value of pension. You technically making 120k a year minimum for next 10 years. Also you are working 40 hours a week compared to a physician. Also you are spared the brutal minimum 3 years of residency.

Things the insurance world look for:
1) Experience with appeals or grievance.
2) Knowledge on prior authorization and appeals
3) Final adverse benefit determination recognition. When people exhausted their appeals.
4) Understanding of how IRO works, and relationship to Medicare and Maximus.
5) How does a WRAP benefit works?
6) Stuff like recognizing if member can get diabetes supplies under Medicare Part B. So it's billed under Medicare instead of the Wrap.

Research those items and place it in your resume, and apply for your local self-funded state insurance. I have a feeling you'll have good odds of being hired.

Best of luck guys. I didn't match last year in Psychiatry. USIMG/SGU Grad 2016/236/228/CS 1st Attempt, 2016 Grad. No skin off my back. Medicine can keep their 28 hour interns. I'll be doing my chill 8-5 life. Retire at a comfortable age with my pension. No stress as long as I do my job. Expectations are there, but it's not that hard to meet after serving medical school. Job security due to the union also! Also if your state is pretty liberal, and have a strong Medicaid program. They are hiring so desperately due to recent political events.

Always willing to help people out. State agencies are different, but I think they are standard in fact... You would need to be list eligible. Need to be able to put right words down to bypass HR mechanical method of weeding people out. Even if position involves medical knowledge, HR will toss out your resume if you don't have buzzwords to meeting the criteria. Also you would need to know how to interview mechnically. So even if interviewer likes you, but you don't say the standard buzz words. You might not get hired. Some managers blur the line, and still hire you. But some managers are strict, and won't hire you even if they liked you.

I am always willing to answer questions if people PM. This option is only available to US Citizens or Green Card. Since you need a valid SSN for most state jobs, and pass a pretty thorough background check.

Thank you.

I needed this perspective. I needed to know that there are still options open to me if I don't get a residency.

Matched advanced but no prelim. When do you have to secure a prelim year by in order to keep an advanced position? If I am undecided on where I want to be could I just sit SOAP out and just pick at what's left in a few weeks?

You need a place to go. Now is not the time to be picky about where it is located.

So I can finally take the time to post on here, since this last ~43 hours has been a whirlwind. (And I don't feel completely like life is over, WTF happened, WTF am I going to do? State of shock. And to others who haven't had SOAP luck yet- may the 1st and 2nd round rejections be ever in your favor!)

Me: US-MD. Applied Ortho. Competitive applicant, adequate IIs. 255/254/P. Other CV deets strong also.
***Before you ask, I am an atypical case. Nontrad. Had a very "unique" background from some wild child days, >decade ago. But the medical community is still very conservative and traditional, esp Leadership (Chairs/PDs = old, white, male ~95% in Ortho at least).***
So going unmatched wasn't technically unexpected or unrealistic, although I didn't really expect this outcome regardless, with IIs and post-interview contact. Oh well. It is what it is.

So had to literally make a last minute decision when I got the email at 11 and was floored- where to go from here? Didn't intend to pursue SOAP or prelim position, had just vague plans of extending graduation, doing research year *if I didn't match*.
Met with AD at 12, with 4th year Surgery Advisor at 1. Convinced to go Prelim surg, and consented (bc postponing grad, doing another year out- had one research fellowship between MS3 and MS4- sounded like misery compounded on the sh*tstorm that was currently my situation.)

Had to pull together a prelim surg-readable PS. Picked 44 Prelim Surg programs (only with Ortho residencies on site, AMCs, some connection with my institution or mentors) and assigned docs and submitted by 2:58 pm, just to get it in before programs could view. Also applied to the 1 Ortho position that was open, though I didn't even apply to this program in the actual MATCH and there are like 200+ unmatched Ortho applicants with many having apps much more competitive than mine. So no bite there, as expected.

  • SOAP Day 1- 2 phone calls from PDs of Prelim Surg programs (1 sent an email first via ERAS message with # to call). Was given contact info for current prelims in program, unmatched to Ortho/ENT last cycle, reapplied to Ortho/Gas/GS this cycle and all matched. So spent most of the later evening on those multiple phone calls.
  • SOAP Day 2- 1 phone call from PD of Prelim Surg program. Provided contact info for current prelims (listed above), spoke with all of them.
The convos with the prelims were all basically from PDs like "Here, talk to some current prelims, in your position last year, all matched categorical positions this year" and the chat was very conversational, they were open, honest, and forward about their experience (un)Match Monday til present. Very useful to hear their stories, perspective on Prelim year and program, reapplying, etc. Also made me feel a little better and not so hopeless and F#cked.

Only the PDs called me for an "interview". Very conversational also, had read my app, mentioned personal connections to my home Ortho/GS programs, gave a brief overview of prelim year from the PD point of view. Also super informative. Only real question I was consistently asked by PDs was "What the heck happened? In your opinion." All calls lasted maybe 10-20 mins. (But then longer follow-up convos with the current prelims.)

Now, I absolutely want to do Prelim Surg. And love my options (well, phone calls and associated program; I don't believe anything/anyone/any outcome other than the worst and 0 offers xxx until I see it on the NRMP site officially. First NRMP email at 11 was like :uhno:🙁:sorry::arghh::bang::beat: etc. etc. already. So just cautiously optimistic at this point. Which I don't intend to be insensitive to anyone else who is sitting with no calls at all or any other awful/scary/uncertain situation. I feel for you, I do. But I got like blindsided and burnt by not matching, especially since I had 10+ IV and post-interview contact initiated by the programs. So yeah...

Sorry, I know this is probably more deets than necessary, not all relevant to specifically the SOAP thread, but have been following this thread since Monday and hadn't had the mental fortitude to put all my bizness out there until now. So I hope some of this TMI can help someone...maybe?

TL;DR
Competitive stats/experiences for Ortho, didn't match bc PD/Chairs can't forgive and forget my youthful discretions.
SOAPing Prelim Surg. 44 apps. 3 calls. SOAP Offers: TBD (Please sweet tiny INFANT JESUS, the one with Golden Fleece diapers. Come THRU for ya girl, pleaseeeeee!!!:help:)

just curious, but how are you guys passing the time?
literally every minute feels like an hour to me
Waiting for phone calls, making phone calls, answering phone calls, avoiding all the texts I've been bombarded with since Monday at 11 (fam & friends- mean well, but do not have time to explain in depth nor the mental stability to talk about these dark timez in depth). And also, in all seriousness, been googling and researching the **** out of other non-clinical career options. $$$$ of debt, no current income or prospects for starting repayment, unsure if SOAP will work out, and unsure if reapply to Ortho vs something else (which honestly, I tried to find something else, I wanted to like something else enough to be happy doing it forever and ever) vs Ortho/back-up. So looked up info for requirements and qualifications for Consulting firms, Medical Sales Reps, MBAs, etc. Just to try to keep myself focused on the solution and having viable options if any of the above don't come to fruition (since clearly, that was inappropriately handled pre-Monday. Don't need to make the same mistakes again).

IMO with stats like those they be crazy not to take ya.

I have gotten 9 calls total.
One program had the Apd and the PD each call me. They have 3 spots open and I'm really hopeful they offer me a spot.
Can't deal with anymore heart break.

Still silence on my end. Just the one call. Which I am VERY thankful for.

Congrats ! Lucky you...have not gotten any calls or emails , I kind of want to give up at this point.

woke up at 5am like this...

Docqb, Could you tell me little bit more about yourself if you don't mind?
Like what?
I tried EM and somehow didn't match.
I don't have any red flags, my board scores n grades are solid. I'm a normal guy. Never got any bad feedback at any point in med school. Honestly shocked I didn't match, but trying to move on. Maybe it's for the best.

Sorry about that.... I keep replaying stuff in my head wondering why I didn't match when I was told
I was a strong candidate, etc. Maybe it was for the best for me as well.

I have a quick question, some of my 45 applications were sent in a few minutes after 3pm. Do you think programs would have seen it? How strict are they at downloading apps at exactly 3pm?

woke up at 5am like this...

I live on the West Coast, applied to programs on the East Coast and West. Wake up at 4:30AM PST, for any 7:30 AM calls/emails from programs on the East. Stay up till 11pm PST, hoping for a call/email from programs from the West Coast.

Since Monday, very little sleep, no calls/emails. Most likely no offers for rounds 1 and 2.

I think we will be fine.
Literally every interviewer is like "how did you not match?"
I can't even give a legitimate reason.
I wish you all the best at noon time

If we haven't heard anything from any of the programs yet at this point, that means we're screwed, right?

Matched advanced but no prelim. When do you have to secure a prelim year by in order to keep an advanced position? If I am undecided on where I want to be could I just sit SOAP out and just pick at what's left in a few weeks?

As mentioned above, this is a VERY bad strategy. There's no guarantee there will be anything left. If you don't get a prelim, you lose your advanced spot. Try to get something in SOAP.

I have a quick question, some of my 45 applications were sent in a few minutes after 3pm. Do you think programs would have seen it? How strict are they at downloading apps at exactly 3pm?

There is no "downloading". Once you apply, your application is immediately viewable by programs. The question is whether programs are still looking at applications, or whether they are tired and have stopped looking. Usually, they keep looking. In any case, there's nothing you can do about it.

This is basically exactly what happened to me.

Looking back I see that what probably happened is that I switched late (like a week before apps went out in sept of 4th year from IM to FM (liked OB and peds). This was a handicap because while my letters were strong; I had 1 plastic surgery letter (doc really knew me, and was a consultant at the residency I targeted), 1FM letter (friend and recent chief resident at my #3), and an OB letter (had a good relationship with the preceptor, who was clinical faculty at OHSU). One of the soap interviewers speculated that programs may have thought I was using FM as a backup based on my combination of letters. Said I'd have done better with 2, even all 3 FM letters.
I'm also fairly introverted at first.

I had board scores and grades well above average, which given my letter situation and the way it may have been interpreted, might have actually been a hindrance.

If I am offered/accept a position in the SOAP can I yell it from the top of a mountain with a megaphone? Or am I supposed to stay quiet til Friday when all those superstar non-SOAPers get their offers? I would hate to get a position then commit a violation and retroactively get @#$%ed.

A very intelligent approach @SouthernBelle12 - Looking for programs where there is a built-in opportunity for a direct Ortho transfer and where your faculty have connections. I predict a good outcome for you --

I just called ERAS, they told me the program directors "Login", they do not "download" the applications. So everything is constantly up to date.

You got a letter from a resident? I didnt know that was even a thing. Can't imagine that had much weight.

I mean... how are they gonna find that out?? Just yell and enjoy!

As the match gets tighter and tighter every year I predict more and more pressure to go this route:

On Saturday, the AOA House of Delegates passed a resolution calling for the profession to advocate for federal legislation to allow U.S. medical school graduates to lay first claims on U.S. residency positions.

Members of the New York State Osteopathic Medical Society (NYSOMS), which submitted the resolution, believe that the nation’s residency positions should first be offered to graduates of U.S. medical schools before international medical graduates (IMGs) can secure them.

“There’s a collision between the numbers of graduates of U.S. medical schools and the limited number of residency positions currently in the U.S.,” says Robert B. Goldberg, DO, the dean of the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York. “Soon, those positions will be saturated before we count one internationally trained physician vying for one of the slots.”

Steven I. Sherman, DO, the president of NYSOMS, says he wrote the resolution because the numbers of medical students are increasing while U.S. residency positions have remained relatively stagnant.
http://thedo.osteopathic.org/2014/0...ng-residency-slots-us-med-school-grads-first/

They should take this a step further and implement any U.S citizens IMG should get dibs after US AMGs!

You got a letter from a resident? I didnt know that was even a thing. Can't imagine that had much weight.

No, he was an attending (3 years in) but was chief at my #3 when he went there, and was still closely tied to the program admits and delivers at their hospital.

You can do whatever you like!

Congrats what are your stats if you dont mind sharing
Caribbean IMG step 1 210, step 2 239, cs pass (all first attempt), applied FM and OB first round, 6 IVs all ranked, no match, just got FM IV

great job on the bump up of 29 points. pretty certain i'm having difficulty getting a residency since i fell >10 pts

program director called me this morning told me I was on the short list and asked me how serious i was about going there! told him i would give my first born to train at his program. lol there is a chance

rads?

Starting to think that being a DO will decrease my chances in the Soap, man this is depressing.
