Is there a list on sdn somewhere of "legit" honor societies (by legit I mean worth mentioning/or joining).

so far all I know about is

Phi Kappa Phi
Tau Beta Pi

Yeah, I just threw all the letters away and deleted all the emails. Unless someone hear can definitively prove me wrong, I don't see much benefit to those pay $75 "honor society" things and basically buy your way into putting something on your app that doesn't mean anything.

But if anyone can post a positive experience with one of those honor societies you have to pay to join that legitimately helped them, I'm willing to listen.

same here

I guess the first one I mentioned might be useful in that they only accept the top 10% of the graduating class so its just another way to show you were at the top of said class :laugh:

maybe it could come in handy in schools that suffer from grade inflation/deflation?

golden key is awesome...:laugh::laugh:

Alpha Eta Mu Beta is respectable..

+1

Does the laughy face mean you're sarcastic?

I was under the impression it was pretty legit, but never did a ton of research.

I think Golden Key might qualify in that category of spam e-mails and letters. It might be well-known, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's legit...

Societies like Golden Key don't tell anyone anything that your GPA wouldn't already.

Phi Kappa Phi has a pretty sweet graduate level scholarship for like $15,000. I'm applying for it for medical school.

Alpha Epsilon Delta is a pre-health honor society. They write good recommendation letters and keep you up to date on community service and host a lot of seminars and brown bag lunches. On my campus it takes like a year to get in, you have to do X amount of community service hours and show up to X number of meetings.

Other than that, its pretty meaningless hah.

My school has had ZERO people get into medical school from AED this year. My ultimate frisbee club has had way more.
