hey all

i was just wondering if there were any guys out there who have struggled with depression.....girls are welcome to post as well please(its just that i always hear of only women who have depression) and are in medical school or practicing. I am being treated for it now which was a huge step for me but i needed to face the reality of it and not hide it. The medications dont seem to help me all that much and ive convinced myself that its gonna get worse and never get better(and have now become obsessive about that). I keep asking my self why do they seenm to work for everyone else so greatly (herd people call them wonder drugs) and not me. Fortunatly i have lots of family support

any support or comments would be greatly app.

Uh, dude? you really shouldnt be expecting to get a lot of support from a website full of strangers. seriously, you may try to make some friends and go hang out with them, instead of looking for encouragement from a computer screen that brags about mcat scores. turn your computer off and go outside, you will feel better.

maybe learning to spell would help your depression

incouragement??

Come on people, give scienceguy a break. I am sure he knows how to spell. I don't think it is appropriate to attack somebody based on one spelling mistake. If we can't say anything good, may be we shouldn't be saying anything at all.

thanks doc2b
and the best to you in your first year at NY college of osteopathic medicine

I believe that depression medication takes a while to start working. Also, some people react different to certain kinds of meds. Also, some depression medication actually makes you more depressed.

Really, you need to turn off the computer, either go outside or go to wal mart and get you a PS2 and blow some stuff up.

OR just chill, quit taking things so serious.

scienceguy,

Depression can be normal when you are a young man trying to figure out your place in this world. It is also part of maturing and learning about yourself and your surrounding. So that is the first thing. Get over it and you will be a better person.. and know better how to deal with people in the future.

The second thing... some medication doesn't work well for everyone, or in fact for a lot of people. I would suggest talking to your doctor about your medication and letting him/her know if it is working or not.

Third, I would defenitely get off the computer and go to a gym. Go work out, do some Cardio, do some body building. Anything to pump you up. If you are at a University or College check for sport activities and participate in them. The best way to get over a difficult time, assuming this is just a difficult time, is to take control of the situation and make postive changes in your environment. Join a group/activity anything to get out of your room and interact with people. NO a$$es like the few people on SDN... but more down to earth people.

This is a good time to start setting some personal goals, breaking them in to small do-able pieces and doing that. Pick-up a hobby or a skill you always wanted to do. DO EXERCISE/ GET YOUR MIND AND BODY ACTIVE. If depression was due to something that recently happened to you.. talk with someone.. acknowledge it and try to deal with your feelings.

I don't suggest picking smoking or drinking.. actually I would say stay away from that.

Good Luck.

I'll second what several of the others have said...but I always like see that moe than one person is of the same opinion.

1. Find a hobby/activity/sport to keep yourself busy. I can't stand just sitting around the house. I always feel better when I am out being what I call "worthwhile"--even if it is just sitting in a coffe shop reading a book...at least I'm out.

2. Speak to your physician. If this medication is not working, your physician needs to re-analyze the situation and possibly try you on other meds. Possibly another medication you are on is causing the depression or another med is making the depression medication less effective.

3. If you are not currently speaking to a professional counselor, please do so. Medicines are not the "cure-all" to depression; actually they are not the cure-all to most things. Speaking to someone may help you understand its origin and also better understand how you can manage yourself on a daily basis. You have to want to feel better before you can expect any changes to happen.

Good luck with everying...I hope you really aren't a troll because this is a real problem for many people.
