Tonight my Organic Chemistry class had our final exam review, and some doctor wanbees (so called pre-med students) were talking about how all you need is a 2.0 range GPA to transfer to the University of Miami to get into their pre-med program...which is not a major but they must not understand that. So when I heard them say this, I immediately said who gives a crap if you only need a 2.0 to transfer to the University of Miami, you won't get into medical school with those kinds of stats. So the three students who were talking about only needing a 2.0 range GPA to get into The university of Miami said there are a lot of students who get into medical school with a 2.0 range GPA. So I said you people have no idea what stats you need to get into medical school. So they said take a look at the website at the University of Miami, and I said right back, who gives a crap what the basic requirements are for transferring to the University of Miami, there is no chance in hell a person with a 2.0 range GPA is going to medical school. Who the hell would admit a person with such a GPA. So the three students said back to me, you just watch me, I will get into medical school. So I said, try all you want, you have no chance of getting into medical school with those kinds of stats. So then I just ignored them bitching and complaining for the rest of the night.

Ah, such good times. 🙂

Although I wouldn't sit there and tell anyone they have no chance at anything, I do agree with you. They seem naive- who cares- they'll saturate the application pool and make us look better is what I say.

Ah.....that's 15 seconds of my life I'll never get back. 😉

I know you were trying to help but I hope you learned a very valuable lesson. Banging your head against the wall will only leave you with a headache...

lol genetic can you use bullet points haha, sentences are too long to read.

What you should have done is told them that they are absolutely right about getting into medical school with a 2.0 and that they are so smart for not overworking themselves like so many pre-meds do. Less competition for you 🙂

Of course, that might be a foot into gunner-land, but hey....

What I was trying to say to them (I don't like these students.. they are lound and annoying) is that they need to learn what it really takes to be a doctor and what it takes to get into medical school and understand the type of life style they will be getting themselves into.

It's no fun trying to educate people who won't listen.

Might as well thrown them a thumbs up and a Bud Light.

I get the idea as to what a gunner is but could someone definite it in plain english?

I think it is someone who wants to do well so they can just say they did better than other people.

LMAO!!! Next time you see them you might want to point out a couple of things to them:

1. Those with less then stellar numbers in their GPA are people who've done extensive postbac work to show they can pull good grades by doing a second degree or a masters program and getting mostly straight A's if not all straight A's.

2. Many of the people from point one also have a great MCAT score in the 90th+ percentile.

3. Miami's minimum GPA to get a secondary is 3.2 not 2.0 and their minimum for out of state students is 3.6.

I had a similar experience only it was with MCAT scores and they were saying you only need a 24 to get in. 😱

I don't think you only need a 24 to get in but you surely didn't need a score as high as yours either.

That said, comparing the two situations is not the same unless you reduce it to like a 21 in your example. There have been many people that I have known who have gotten in 24's-26s but they have had extensive clinical experience, been in a state like yours and mine in which many schools are more focused on other things instead of solely numbers, and they mostly had high GPAs or they had a low verbal due to English being a second language and had high scores in the other sections.

Also Ana, there was a student just this year that got an interview at CCLCM with a 24, so its tough to say. But 24 is the minimum at most schools so it might be possible though not as easy as someone with say a 30-35+ range.

However it isn't possible to get in with a 2.0 without extensive postbac work to show you can handle the work.

LMAO!!! Good one!! Yeah some people are clueless. I wouldn't even call it naive so much as clueless and in denial of reality.

It's still a ridiculous stretch to say you only need a 24 on the MCAT, considering such a small % get in with that score.

It's heartwarming to know that there are students like that whose spots we will eventually take. I love it when I ask people their major and they say "pre-med."

Honestly, I bet they did not want to swallow up their pride, but deep down, they are probably going to investigate what you said.

I've actually heard of a few schools that have a "premed" major....the only downfall is that if you don't get in you are left with a premed major....Not very useful.

On topic. I don't care too much what gpa people think you need to have. Even people who do have what it takes to be docs can be idiots. Many of them live in a little sunshine and puppydog land of what medicine is really like. Even me, and I've been around it most of my life. You got to fight the urge to judge them...even if they are idiots. Odds are we'll all say something stupid or naive by the time we are finished with the process.

I had a guy like this in my physics class. He had just finished his undergrad last year with like a 2.0, was working at Big O Tire stores and "filling in the gaps" one class at a time so he could apply to med school next year. I just nodded my head and wished him luck. One more person I don't have to compete with.

Mad clinical experience at Big O i heard. don't hate. haha.

I wasn't saying you only need a 24, just saying that its not truly comparable to use that example against the 2.0 example because that is at least near the cutoffs at some med schools (state schools) whereas 2.0 is not even near a cutoff range. Hope that clarifies.

When you have to deal with people like that....the best response is something like this:

I forget all these people whenever I get down about only 40-45% of applicants getting in... it's always nice to get that reminder

lol this is actually i think a positive statistic, as acceptance rates are like 5% hehe.

For individual schools, it might be 5-10%; However, for any given med applicant, there is ~50% chance that they will not end up anywhere. Stories like this always put me in an optomistic mood, though. 😀

i'm not making this up when i say this...i have a friend with a 13 mcat that got into an osteopathic school....it's complete bullcrap and he practically begged a dr. to give him a great lor

Yeah...I know plenty of people are are downright stupid and just have great memories that are currently in med school. Whatever...it's all BS...plenty of people get in that shouldn't. Same way that sometimes you are going to meet kids like that who have 2.0's to transfer, and sometimes you will meet kids like that who have close to a 4.0... Life is unfair like that. Just concentrate on what you need to get there.

Haha, I'm pretty sure NO ONE in my class had an undergraduate GPA of 2.0. Don't worry, leave them be...people like that don't listen and are not worth wasting your time with. They'll find out soon enough...nothing squashes an arrogant attitude like the harsh reality of the application process.

I have nothing against osteopaths (the good ones are good and the crap ones take the family practice jobs in the boondocks that no wants anyways)... but 13 on the MCAT ? Most people on this board have a single section that matches that 😱

i wouldnt say impossible. maybe someone has megae connections (parents chair of med school board, parents are big time donors)... never say never. but the chances of them getting in are very very slim

uhh.....you really don't need me to tell you that you can't believe everything that you read on SDN...

uhh.....you really don't need me to tell you that you can't believe everything that you read on SDN...

yeah, I know, I know... my current physician and a specialist I see are both DO's and they are absolutely fantastic... it's just some of the pre-DO crowd on SDN and all the (bull**** or not) 13 MCAT stories that make me want to vomit...

not buying what you are trying to sell!

Don't bother arguing with idiots. They'll drag you down to their level and beat your with experience.

This didn't happen. You get a minimum of a 2 per section, I think, so I could've slept through two sections, taken one, and gotten a minimum of a 15. And I think med school is hard. This kid would get CREAMED after the first biochemistry exam.

Wow - gullible... How could anyone believe that any part of getting into medical school was easy? Or even anything less than really hard? Have you ever heard the words "medical" "school" and "easy" in the same sentence? (Other than "It is really easy to get rejected from every medical school you apply to.")

Jeeeez..... kids these days... 😛

Mad clinical experience at Big O i heard. don't hate. haha.

Big O? I didn't know he had a med school, too. Assumed it was mostly an engineering outfit.

Gotta ask.

Why are you even bothering fighting with these people? Yes, you'll probably get into med school at some point. Yes they'll probably be among the VAST majority of "pre-meds" that self-select somewhere before submitting the primary application.

So what good does it do to jump in on their conversation and be Mr. High-and-Mighty? You're not going to convince them until reality has given them a swift kick in the face.

I guess it was more the context of the conversation. She didn't have high grades, she had no clinical experience or anything EC going for her and she was acting like if she got a 24 they HAD to let her in. I just hate the sense of entitlement. When they act like since they put the bare minimum of work in they "deserve" to go to medical school.

(And I know there are people with scores like that who worked very hard and I'm not hating on them; quite the opposite, more power to them. I'm hating on the people who think they can just coast by with the bare minimum and the world has to open doors for them.)

Man the 13 on the MCAT sounds crazy. Don't know how credible it is but it would lead to embarassing conversations like...

"So how did you do on the MCAT?"
"Oh , I got a 13"
"Oh really? Nice, which section?"
"Uh...the whole thing?"
"Oh..."

Something like that happened to me with the SATs, totally fine girl I met on the T and I were talking about the SATs, she told me her score and I was like "awesome- was that for the verbal or math?" and she called me an dingus and walked off!

"You are totally missing the point [Genetics]. You can't go around telling people that they are not cut out for a certain career. You will get black listed really quickly by doing something like that. You are in no power, or position, to tell people they can't pursue something they want to do. It is up to them to decide when enough is enough and know what it takes to succeed."

"Good luck passing judgements by people for the rest of your life. Are you going to tell a coke addict that they are useless to society when you treat them for the 5th time in one year?"

Genetics, I hope you have a good memory, and a good sense of irony (how does your foot tase?).

But to Anastasis' point, I've known plenty of kids who get rejected from schools, and speaking from that same sense of entitlement complain "But I met all of the minimum requirements." I guess some people don't get the whole humble plan on the worst, hope for the best type mentaily. Or the fact that they don't have some special privilege that elevates them above everyone else.

I'll refresh his memory HumbleMD.

From the "When do we give the tough news: Not everyone will be a succesfull pre-med" thread, found here:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=350153

I sure would not want HumblMD as a tutor for any of my classes. The role of a tutor is to help a student in need, not to be judgemental and tell them that they are not fit for a certain career. Go ahead and tell her that she is not fit to be a doctor and see if you get fired from your job.

If you want to help others, then work at helping them succeed in the class and not drawing opinions that will truly hurt them.

Thanks for the backup eternalrage.😀

The comments Genetics made about Humble were pretty ironic and stupid, so he probably deserves to get clowned. However, I don't think in his original post he was telling those kids a) what he thought of them as people, b) their fitness as future doctors, or c) to not pursue medicine. I'm sure he probably thinks all these things, but he didn't flat out say that as far as we know. All he did was make a statement of fact. 99% of people aren't going to get into medical school with a 2.0 gpa.

AH! What one states in the original post vs. intentions?? Well golly gee whiz, Genetics even has an opinion about that! Taken from the same thread as the other quotes:

Maybe HumbleMD learned a life lesson in this thread. What you type as your initial message will always be perceived for what your true intentions are. Take a look at how many famous people you hear on the news now and then that have to apologize for what they say and they tend to say that didn't mean what they said. Also, a long post is often not read after the first or two paragraphs. When you do public speaking, you need to get y our point across in only a few sentences otherwise people get bored and tone you out.

If you don't want to get bashed, then you need to say what you wanted to mean in the correct way in the first post. After the first post has been posted (and it was not your intentions), the damage has already been set. There is no way to correct without starting a new thread (except for the individuals who have to much time on their hands so they can read a lot of posts).

BWAHAHAHAHAHHA PWNAGE
