What would be better ... going to DO School or going to a Caribean School?

I am currently a sophmore with a 3.0 GPA Bio major, just starting to get into some more difficult classes and am just contemplating whether or not I should switch majors or not. I need a 3.6 or so GPA each semester to graduate with a 3.4 or so. Should I switch majors or just work my but of as a BIO major? Will I be able to get into a D.O. school with a 3.3 GPA when I graduate as a BIO major? Carribean?

- Also ... would it be better if I graduate as a sociology/philosophy/liberal art having taken the pre-req's of a DO/MD school and graduate with a 3.4 or 3.5 than a bio major as a 3.1 or 3.2 ?

Thanks ... I know this is a loaded question. Very Happy

Yes you should be able to get into DO with a 3.3 and you defenietly will get into carribean (but I wouldn't pick a foreign over DO).

As far as majors... major in something that you will get the highest GPA (and what you are interested in the most), they don't care what you major in. Just make sure you get good grades in your pre-req's regardless.

it really doesnt matter what's your major...as long as you keep a good math/science gpa.....

The DO/carribean choice is totally yours... there are lots of forums dedicated to this already..... at the end of the day, what it boils down to is would you rather prefer to stay in the U.S and be a DO or go to a foreign med school to be an MD? I personally would stay in the U.S....it's probably better for getting residencies.... but its not like its impossible to get a residency if you went to med school in the carribean.. lots of ppl have done it...

A 3.3 and a mid 20's MCAT shud be good enuff to get u into a DO school..

if my only goal in undergrad was to get to med school, then I would major in the liberal arts.

a 3.3 mid 20s (25-28) will give you a good chance at DO
a 3.3 32+ will give you a good shot at MD

I cant tell you much about carib since I am really biased. I feel that only ignorance would cause someone to make that choice if they can get into any MD or DO school in the US. But a lot of people would disagree with me.

The DO/carib thing has been debated over and over.....it usually boils down to better overall opportunities and training as a US DO....vs not being able to stand the idea of not having "MD" after your name....

Major in whatever you want...just keep the GPA up and take the prereqs

u are much better off keeping the bio major. the new mcat requires much more bio background than intro to bio can provide. some schools actually require u to take biochem + genetics now and these will most def help u in med school. u are not out of the running to get into a US allo school. u need to show an upward trend in grades, good ECs, and a solid MCAT. if u ask premeds the DO vs Carib ques, u will get a variety of answers based on the individual's own biases. if u ask nearly any doctor, they will say go D.O. one of my very good friends is at St. George's in Grenada right now, and is not very happy. she will get a fine education and will prob be fine for residency, but pple there are unhappy and basically count the days until they come back to the U.S. for rotations. on the other hand, pple in D.O. school, even if initially they wanted MD, tend to be very happy at their respective school. Imo, happiness matters. also, DO will pretty much guarantee a US residency (unless u fail the boards), whereas foreign schools (despite what they may say) do not. your primary focus at this point should be doing well in your classes and immersing yourself in the medical field as much as possible. u want to make sure this is what u want before u sit for the mcat and/or send out your AMCAS app. best of luck!
