I will be applying to DO schools this coming year, and I was wondering what people know about which schools take only state/regional residents.
Some people apply to all 19 schools, which seems like a waste of time if some schools won't look at your app if you're from another state/region.
Here is my (guess) list of schools that will/will not seriously consider applicants from outside their region (BTW, by "seriously consider", I mean that <90% of their accepted folks come from their state/region)

Kirksville: Yes
Lake Erie: Yes
Michigan State: No
AZCOM: Yes
Chicago: Yes
New York: Yes? Not sure..somebody help?
Nova: Yes
Ohio: No
OK State: No
Philadelphia: Yes
UHS-COM: Yes
UMDNJ: No ?? Help?
New England: No--? Again, not sure. (New Eng Only?)
Texas: No
UOMHS: Yes
West Virginia: No
Western U: Yes
Pikeville: No (Appalachia only)
Touro: Yes

Corrections to my list would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Nanook of the North

Most of NYCOM's students come from New York State, but I doubt it's anywhere near 90%. I think I remember hearing 70 or 80%.

Tim of New York City.

Update:
Someone e-mailed me to let me know that Nova is around 80% in-state.

That's still pretty grim for out-of-staters, but I'm still going to apply. There are days when I really long for nice weather.

I think your list sounds right. But Texas will accept out-of-staters if your numbers are good enough. The standards are higher, but they don't try to keep out-of-staters out of the school (though they do limit them to 10% of the class)

Well, you are right about UMDNJ-SOM. That is a NJ state school and therefore, they accept about 90% of their students from in-state. PCOM is not a state school although their name might be misleading, so they do accept more out-of-state students. I read somewhere that NYCOM is not a state school - however, it does show preference to students who are from the Northeast. I'd recommend checking out the Princeton Review's book on the Nation's Best Medical Schools. The osteopathic schools are way in the back, but their short descriptions will help you out. Take care, and good luck.

To say that Pikeville looks at only students from Appalachia is not entirely correct. 37% of the 2002 class (22 students)did not come from the Appalachian area. And another 7 students came from areas in Appalachia, but really are not in the heart of the Appalachian area. We have people from New York City, Chicago, Miami, Detroit, St. Louis, Arkansas, Utah, and many other places. If you are interested in primary care in a rural or underserved area, you have a chance at acceptance at Pikeville. The school has NO quota for regional students.

Hi,

WVSOM will accept applicants from out of the area. Their mission is to supply physicians for rural Appalachia, but in my class and in the next class, it is definitely no where near 90%. In my class (sophmore)we have students from Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Tenn., Virginia, etc. In the freshman class, they have accepted more students, as well as a larger percentage of out of state students.

Hope this helps.

I appreciate all the response!

The state schools seem to be the clear wastes of time. The private, "regional" ones (UNECOM, Pikeville, Nova, NYCOM, maybe a few others) seem to be less so. They accept mostly state/region residents, but have a fair number of outsiders.

Hopefully being from Alaska will be something the schools see as unique (Hey, how many Alaskans apply to Pikeville? 🙂), and might add to the diversity of their schools.

I know that the literature from Kirksville says something about a commitment to taking students from all over the US. Does anybody know of other DO schools that have this mindset?

Western U: They 'reached' out for me, 2500 miles away----Cali to PA-----so I'd say they're pretty open to applicants from across the USA...

Nanook,

Though I believe pikeville has some preference for regional residents, I still recieved an offer for an interview. Nova also extended me an interview. Some here have said Nova has state pref. I'm from Michigan and I got a offer from Nova. Tough to say, for sure. My numbers are above the avgs for most entering classes but by no means extraordinary. Kudos for doing the research first, before wasting your money. It looks like your making some good choices already.

Good luck.
