This thread is on a lighter note... This covers some of my experiences before I matriculate in January 2005. In other words, this is what I have learned and experienced as an applicant and accepted medical student.

About 2-3 weeks ago, I locked up my apartment on Sint Maarten. I'm paying $650 a month for a fully furnished, university type apartment. It is somewhat spacious also.

But here is where the fun starts. My backyard is an ocean lagoon. I live 5 minutes (walking distance) away from the school and beach.

I know that medical school is about studying, but it definitely helps to be in a world famous location. Talk about having fun during the semester breaks!

We all know medical school is hard, but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

The medical students at AUC

1. They are extremely nice and very helpful. That gunner, competitive, cutthroat attitude just isn't there. The med students are extremely helpful. I've received so many PM's offering to help me get situated to the island.

USMLE Scores at AUC

2. USMLE scores were lower at AUC than other big 3 schools but don't worry about this. There was a reason for it. They will go up. For one, AUC has instituted block exams. They are working on improving the system right now.

But here is the real reason that they will go up. AUC has turned their 5th semester into a Kaplan USMLE review course! Kaplan teaches the course by video. So, the entire 5th semester is spent preparing for the USMLE. Look for USMLE scores and pass rates to really go up!

Plenty of Research opportunities
The school is committed to giving their students research opportunities. The Clinical Research Society is the united organization for this.

Final Note

I can't comment on other schools as I have not studied them nearly as much as AUC (for obvious reasons). But I did want to give everyone an insider's look at AUC. You can have some rather good moments in the Caribbean. It does not have to all be about suffering.

I thought you were already a student at AUC but you haven't even lived in the caribbean yet? 😱

Now maybe we can hear from AUC students who have actually experienced the island to get a first hand account. I know you want to present a rosy view of your school but to get a more accurate view of the situation for students who may be interested in AUC, it is only fair to hear opinions from primary sources.

I can only wish you good luck and hope that your beach side view is everything you want it to be and more. :luck:

AUC, thanks a lot for that post. It's nice to hear that side, I really like that 5th semester USMLE course! That's just awesome.

I am applying the osteopathic schools, but if they give me no love, I will definately consider AUC. Staying in the states is a big deal for me due to having a good relationship and family here, and my mentor is an osteopathic physician... but I wanna be a doc, and time is tickin...

Best of luck 👍 :luck: 👍 :luck:

Glad to see you be on the right side. Good luck to you and I do hope you get into some DO school so as to avoid the caribbean. :luck:

OnMyWayThere,

I really hope you get into DO school. It's a great accomplishment! Best wishes! 🙂

Here is an actual website from AUC alumni:

http://www.aucalumni.net/

Be sure to click on the AUC alumni of the month. You will find some incredible success stories.

For all those who think that going to the Caribbean will hold you down for the rest of your medical career, just check those stories out.

Also, anyone who is considering the Caribbean and needs some motivation should take a look. Anything is possible!

Also, something else... AUC alumni at their own cost and time organized this site. People who are now very successful doctors took the time to make this website to help others going through the process. The student body at AUC is really special in that they actually try to help their fellow classmates!

Its that unselfish, caring attitude that makes me proud of my school.

With a book list like this, it is wise that you be on your "A" Game when school starts!
