I am posting this here because most of you are already in pharmacy school or past it, right?

I am currently a senior in high school. I am considering becoming a pharmacist but here's the thing. I don't want to apply straight to pharmacy schools a state away. New Jersey only has one which I probably won't get into.

I don't feel ready to live one state away or feel confident enough in becoming a pharmacist.

I do know that I enjoy chemistry. I keep hearing that you can major in chemistry or biology and get the bachelors. afterwards, I can apply to pharmacy schools.

I was taking a look at several curriculums and it doesn't make sense. to me, it seemed like a bachelor of chemistry curriculum and the prerequisites for pharmacy school don't match up.

Was it just me misreading the curriculums or do i really have to go out of my way and overload my schedules to the max 18 credits per semester to be done with it all in 4 years?

can someone who got a bachelors first help me out?

You're not reading them wrong. It's widely acknowledged that a Chemistry major will not necessarily fill all of your pharmacy pre-requisites. A pre-pharmacy or even pre-med track will more than likely fill everything you need, though.

Hopefully after you complete a 4 year degree you will feel confident enough to move away from home and pursue pharmacy, if you still feel like becoming a pharmacist.

yeah i know. that is why i am going for a chemistry major. if I decide not to go to another state or not to become a pharmacist, there is always graduate school.

I was just looking for more information on this. would it be somewhat simple to get a bachelors and get all the required courses done? or will me and my advisor in college have to struggle with putting it together?

That depends on how many of the classes don't mesh between the given pharmacy school and the given education plan for a given Chemistry major (Let alone emphases or specializations within the major...)

How about a Chem major with a biology minor? That would surely complete your pre-requisites.

Here's what I would do. Look at 5 schools you would consider attending for pharmacy school. Then look at your chosen undergrad school's Chem degree. What classes, specifically, will you need to be able to apply for pharmacy school? Is it just A&P? Is it A&P and Micro? Is it A&P, Micro, and a second Calculus? Even in the latter example, it would be do-able to fit those courses into a Chem coursework plan... probably.

So without more information from YOU (i.e., the chem coursework plan, what classes you'll be missing, etc) we just can't help you much.

For some people and some schools, it's easy to finish the pharmacy pre-requisites with a Chem degree. If the school is Touro-CA for example, the pre-requisite list is really short and easy to satisfy. If it's UCSF, it's a lot longer and more difficult to fulfill!

So there's just a lot of variability and subjectivity. No defined answer remains without more information.

I applaud you on considering both your maturity level and the importance of a back-up plan. I would also like to suggest that a Biology undegrad. degree would also provide opportunities for chemistry and for graduate study if you so need to. A mesh between chemistry and biology, for example, molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, or toxicology would be great undergraduate majors for you to consider.

thank you. hey, could you do me a favor and send me your email address? i really want to talk to you more on this.

it would be easier through private email.

I know, right? It's like spy work or something. Bad spies for sure, but still.

I say we start a dialog in what we think they are saying. I'll start.
P4S: Hey whats up?

AMG: hey, could you do me a favor and send me your number? i really want to talk to you more on this.

Oh deary, this is going to get hairy.

We're just discussing pharmacy stuff that no one cares about!

Yup. Silly pre-pharm forum.
