Where do you guys get the thousands of dollars to spend for this entire process of getting into med school?
Like I just saw on the other thread, it seems like you guys have spent almost like $5000 or more..
financial aid money?
loans from private lenders?
parents are rich ?
you worked a lot during your college years?

Working two+ jobs throughout college. No other sources of aid here. Okay, okay, my dad paid one secondary application fee (of 18) and Mom's been making sure I still eat, got me a garmet bag, but the bulk of this process has come out of my pocket. My current estimated costs are probably in the 4k range.

Savings and work. I wish my parents were rich.

Took a year off and worked my a$$ off. At the rate I?m going I may even have enough to cover my first year if I get off that darn state school waitlist.

parents were upset that i quit my job to try to pursue medicine so they're not officially paying for anything. paid for my own SMP (loans), paid for Kaplan MCAT class (useless), paying for all application fees.

Though, to be fair, despite my parent's disapproval, they're still parents at the end of the day. I got more "birthday money" this year than I normally get, they let me live at home, they let me use the car, and a few times - i called the credit card company to find out how come I never got my bill for the month - only to find out that it had already been paid (by dad). I'd say all things considered, they probably covered 25-30% of the process for me.

I worked two part-time jobs while in undergrad and worked for two years after graduation before deciding to apply to med. Still - when my account went down to $300 a few weeks ago before my paycheck at my new job kicked in - i got scared.

I don't know how the people from california manage to afford it with all the plane flights. I feel lucky that I live in the northeast and can drive to half the interviews i'm getting.

To answer the OP's question,I've always worked part-time while attending school (hs, undergrad and grad) AND I've learned how to save.

gee, my research job does not pay that well AT ALL!!!

Luckily my husband has been willing to work overtime to help with the application costs 😍

and in a pinch, yes plastic does wonders...although I need to show some restraint as to cultivate a decent credit rating for financial aid. bleh.

Good to hear others are in debt. I didn't have to pay for undergrad (basketball scholarship). Grad school and med school app process currently running $24,800 debt. As long as I can eat and sleep in a safe neighborhood, I don't really care.

Mommy and Daddy. I think they still feel guilty about me deciding to forgo my Wash U and Vandy acceptances to go to my current university for undergrad on a full scholarship. Our money situation wasn't as good then. I have to say, however, that I am very inspired by you folks who are financing this process out of your own pockets.
