Ok people, I'm having trouble deciding between the two. On one hand, South is 3 years which is great for a career changer like me. On the other hand, UGA is mad cheap and I would probably have more of a life there. Any thoughts?

Although this will increase UGA's superiorirty complex over the other schools in the state of Georgia, I would say forget South and go to UGA.

South is a good program and all, but for the money, its just not worth going to South when you can go to UGA.

starsweet,
I would be very proud to have to choose bwn UGA and South coz UGA is very difficult to get in. I would go there and save money. Am doing my pre-pharm in Athens too hoping to get in next year.. What were your stats if u don't mind?? When did u apply?? Any advice for me?

Again - congrats! I was thinking about you the other day and wondering what you were planning to do. I hear you about the 3 vs. 4 year thing. But, I would definitely pick UGA over South. My reasoning is as follows:

1)MUCH cheaper - just think of the student loans you won't have that the rest of us will!
2) The UGA program is a well-established program, as opposed to South which is much newer.
3) If you think at all that you might want to stay in Georgia or close to GA to practice, I think it would be a big advantage in terms of the contacts you might make and just the general sense of knowing others from there. It seems like every other pharmacist I meet has a degree from UGA.
4) Athens is a very cool town, even though it pains me to admit that (being the Tech grad that I am  )
5) It sounds good now, but how are you going to feel about going to school year round when you hit the summer between years 2 and 3 and you've been in school almost continously since Aug. 2006? My hat is off to the people who can do the 3 year programs - I personally think that I am going to want a bit of a break to spend time with my family, work some intern hours, and just generally regroup.

Good luck with the decision.

In case anyone wondered what I meant about superiority complex of UGA people, here it is!

Don't anyone ever forget UGA is the fu*** God of pharmacy programs in the state of Georgia. Mercer sucks ass because it's not UGA. South sucks ass because it's not UGA. If you even bother with the Mercer or South, it's mearly a "backup" school in case you don't get into UGA. I'm sick and tired of this bullshi*

Also, ATHENS>>>>>>>atlanta>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Savannah because every city in the whole damn state sucks except Athens

btw- Just because you graduate from UGA doesn't mean jack shi* when it comes to networking. It's all personality and how much you get involved, not where you got your stupid ass degree. I will be a graduate of that horrible "newly established school" and I can guarantee my networking will allow me to get a job anywhere I want in the state if I choose to do so. +pissed+ +pissed+ +pissed+

I agree with the points made by rxylnn and have one other point to add. You have to have 1500 hours of pharmacy experience before the Georgia pharmacy board will grant you a license. You get 1000 hours in your fourth year so you have to get those other 500 hours in all your free time (yeah right). If you have summers off you can work as an intern, get paid and not have to work 500 hours after graduation 😀 . I don’t know how South does it in 3 years 😕 . Where do they fit in the extra 500 hours in? Do they just do it after graduation or do they just not sleep!?! :scared: Personally I don’t want to have to work on top of Pharmacy School if I can help it. Just something else to think about.

It's one of the things that sucks about being a 3 year program in Georgia. However, I worked during most of my breaks and I already have my 500 hours in so no waiting to take the board exam for me. In fact, most of us have worked our 500 hour requirement during our weeks off. There are a few though that choose to do it after graduation. It's a personal decision, but one you have to make coming to South

Wow, what an overwhelming response for UGA. You guys have brought up some excellent points, especially about having to complete 500 hours in 3 years vs. 4 years. And maybe I would get tired of school between P2 and P3. I guess I am one of those people though who gets sick of school easily, especially coming from Tech! And being a Tech grad, I do like Atlanta more than Athens. :meanie: But I will have to think it over before I make a final decision. Luckily UGA doesn't require a deposit.

RxGirlie, I applied early in August and my overall is 3.2 (engineering major) and pre-pharm is like 3.8 or around there. I got a 91 on the PCAT. I think applying early really helped, so definitely do that! :luck:

I'd love to be doing my undergrad in Athens, they have one of the biggest and most beautiful Delt chapters in the nation - have any of you partied there? The house is un-freaking-believable.

Just to clarify for everyone, I was giving starsweet my personal opinion on her situation. I have never attended UGA, I will not be attending UGA for pharmacy school, nor did I apply to UGA. I happen to think that all 3 programs in Georgia have their positives and negatives. So Caverject, did you turn down a UGA offer to go to South? If so, then tell us your reasoning why you choose South. I'm sure starsweet would like to hear both sides.

i dont think anyone turns down UGA to go to south...
but then again i could be wrong....

c-ject is right... they have a terrible complex over there that is completely ridiculous...

oh and as far as the connections being useful....
i assume you're a female starsweet... dont count on the "connections" helping you out all that much...

ok...
yeah you're right...
while these clowns are in athens...
but during the 4th year since Athens is in the middle of nowhere... you have to move to an area with some experiences available....

thus..
once they leave athens.... while athens is still wonderful... ATL and SAV all the sudden become completely cool too..

i think it has something to do with the presence of these demi-gods....

perhaps the coolness just follows them around the state....

oh and i'm sure not everyone from UGA is like that... i just havent met any and if they aren't like that to start with, just give them time... it comes out eventually

Yes, I would definitely like to hear both sides. 😉 Though I agree with ultracet, I don't think many turn down UGA to go to South.

Again I have told you many times. If you want to go to retail and work as soon as possible, and don't care about the cost, then go to South.

However, with the additional amount of debt, I think that you would have to work a lot of overtime to make profit on the one saved year.

While I understand what you meant, your post exemplified what I was talking about because you made UGA to appear all mighty and glorious to attend. I did not see one negative in your post about UGA.

As far as did I turn down UGA to go to South...I never applied to UGA. If I did, I would of been an out of state applicant.

However, I did turn down my 3rd choice (West Virginia) to attend my second choice (South). I never got an interview at Nova, which was my first choice, but in retrospect I am very thankful I did not go to Nova. (family reasons;nothing against the school)

Albany & Columbus also all of a sudden become completely cool too....

speaking of which, at South the students are not forced to go moving all around the state to do their last year of rotations. If you want to though, you're more than welcome to do rotations in any city outside of Savannah as long as there are preceptors that will take you in. We also have sites all over Atlanta if you would like to do rotations there.

yeah, we are all going into retail here so forget clinical pharmacy 🙄

I would choose South, just because of it being a 3 year program. I'm pretty tired of school and would love to be graduating in 2 more weeks instead of 1 year and 2 weeks. If you are planning on becoming a clinical pharmacist, you will still have to do a residency. You can still get a residency if you go to South and you'll be practicing a year earlier.
