I still haven't made up my mind in what I want to major in but I have been thinking of Majoring is spanish and getting a minor in french. I know you can get in with any major but would it be perceived as taking the easy way out instead of becoming a science major? And would me having a spanish last name reinforce that thought? BTW my husband is hispanic thats why my last name is spanish.

If majoring in Spanish/French is what you are driven to do, I say go for it!! As long as you do the prereqs and fulfill the requirements of the school you are interested in, you are an eligible applicant for whatever program- if anything, a unique applicant too, since you're not the exact 'mold' in comparison to the many biochem/chem/microbio/bio/genetic/pharmacology majors.

I am not Russian by ancestry but that was my major- it was just what I really loved to study, and I had a chance to live there a number of times after graduating. goood luck!!! :luck:

As long as you fulfill all the pre-reqs they shouldnt care. Depending on where in the country you plan on working speaking Spanish fluently could really give you an edge in finding a job also.

I completely agree with Apteka. If majoring in Spanish is what you want then definitely do it. The prereqs that the school of pharmacy requires from you are obviously something that you must fulfill--once you have those, you are on your way. I think it looks pretty darn good if you majored in another language especially Spanish. The hispanic population in the US is at an all time high and it works in your favor to be fluent in Spanish if you want to pursue pharmacy (especially retail). You will be dealing with individuals from all walks of life and it sure looks good if you can communicate with those people in their native language. Just a thought.

My BS is in psychology so I'm definitely not your traditional student in that aspect (most pharm applicants have their degrees in chem, bio, etc). When I interviewed at USN they saw this as a positive; they also loved it when I told them that I was fluent in another language (just so happens that it's Spanish).

Bottom line, go with your passion and desire--and make certain that you do great in the prereqs required from you. Best of luck :luck:

if you want to get a major in spanish...go right ahead.

It doesn't matter what degree you get into...but remember there are certain pre-reqs that they want you to have before you can enter. So you have to take them on top of your degree.

My advice is to make sure you get those pre-reqs going...once you have those, any degree would be fine.

I also looked at the school of my choice and saw what classes they made you take WHILE in pharmacy school (ie microbiology) and took those so that I had a good foundation of them before taking that class.

Hey DownonthePharm, my girlfriend will have an emotional breakdown if she sees your avatar, I have to secretly log in to SDN now as if it were a porn/dating site.

non-trad major [> or =] trad-major in terms of admission from reading SDN threads (mostly on pre-allo though)

I agree on all points. A major in Spanish should be fine, even desirable. (It would definitely set you apart from the multitudes of Chem and Bio majors applying.) Plus, Spanish is incredibly useful these days. (Just make sure you're also up on your medical terminology, too!)

As long as you've completed your pre-reqs, have a good GPA (both total and in those pre-req/science classes), and score well on the PCAT, I don't see any reason why a school would have a problem with you. If you're worried that they would question your dedication to pharmacy (as opposed to foreign languages, etc), you might want to work/volunteer in the field for a little bit. That would show them that you a) know what you're getting into, and b) are serious about this career path.

Good luck!!!

I was so glad to read your post and find out that your school saw your BS in psych as a positive thing. I too have a BS in psych (and master's too) and plan to apply to pharm programs after I complete my prereqs, but I was really nervous applying as a "nontraditional" major. I was (and still kinda am) nervous that someone with a bachelors in bio, pharmacology, etc. with the same gpa would be picked over me. Do you think that's true? After all, people with those majors do have much more science experience.

Hi psychpharm,
I can understand your nervousness about the "nontraditional" major (I was as well), however psychology is a wonderful major to have (and even more impressive to hold a masters in it). Communication is a major player in pharmacy and what better communicator then an individual who has studied the human psyche. Yes, it is true that people with majors in bio, chem, etc MIGHT have a better science experience but you too can prove that you are capable in that department by doing great in your science prereqs. Having a strong background in the humanities is just as important. As I stated in my earlier posting, pharmacy is a field that encounters individuals from all walks of life--you have to know how to address the concerns of others and do it in a skillful and tactful manner--your strong background in psychology has definitely prepared you for this. Make certain that when you are ready to apply, you incorporate your major in that light. I assure you that it will only benefit you.
Best of luck :luck: And please please be nervous no more 😀
