I wrote this in pre-dent forum but no response... so I'm trying here!🙂

Hey all

I'm just wondering if any of you out there female 'pre-dentists' are planning on doing specialization. Of course we should worry about this when we actually even get into dentistry right?

but the reason I'm asking this is I know that it is much easier to get into specialization if you go to a states school rather than UBC (Canadian school).
I'm attending UBC right now as an undergrad and because it is cheaper, and because my family lives here it would be better for me to go here financially. However, if I want to do specialization it would be better to go to states school.
(UBC apparently sucks at sending students to specialization)

Why I ask as a female? Because we have a thing called 'pregnancy'. If I actually do specialization (which I really would like to do) I will be graduating earliest at an age of 28.
As we all know it is best for the child for us to get pregnant between age of early 20's to maybe early 30's. This means if I want a child of my own I will have a chance to work maximum of 2~3years before I get pregnant.

I ask this because if I end up not doing specialization I will just want to go to UBC which has different requirements than state school. They barely look at EC and only DAT and GPA. I'm in 4th year now (didn't apply to states schools yet) and I would very much like to get some opinions on what other female or male dent/predent students and dentists think!

I'm a male...from the united states so I'm not the demographic you were looking for...but since no one else is helping you and im all meth-ed out i'll say:

1.) yes, it's better to specialize in the united states. the systems you guys have up in canada are not ideal.

2.) um...pick a specialty...for women wanting to start a family you could, in theory be any specialty...but realistically there are like no women in OS...and to do a 6 year and start/raise a family is nigh on impossible. (and please don't reply with "but i know dr. girly-girl'" who did this...i'm sure there are exceptions i'm talking about the norm)

Some specialities that are conducive to your situation are perio and ortho. Ortho is the least taxing of the major specializations (meaning you can work through most of your preg and then come back quickly) and it allows the you the most wiggle room when it comes to a schedule. You dont even have to have your own office...some orthos will come to a pedo/general office a couple times a week or month. Perio allows you the same thing...tho just as taxing...if not more, than general dentistry you can have that nomad style of practice going to other's office.

i think the best advice...which you don't seem to have followed thus far...is plan ahead. Sit down with you husband...or partner...and figure out what works best.
