Is this even possible? If yes, what is the procedure?and which university offers that?

Welcome to the group...This is no doubt a great place to get all the information for dentistry in the US.
Well I prepared for part I over an extended period of time of 4 months. But the last 3 weeks it was hardcore. I guess you have pretty much all the things you need for the part 1. Hope the Decks u have a 2001 or later. Kaplan has some great reading material for part 1 , but again it is a sort of review...and would help if you have some basics clear in your mind for the subjects.
Well it is not possible for anyone to judge how long one should study for a good score. But a thorough review of the stuff you have is important. I read my texts once....kaplan and papers 2 times each...and decks 3 times...
And yes the entire body's anatomy ..including abdomen and thorax is important...so make sure to read everything (atleast whatever is there in the kaplan book)
Gud luck on you prep!

I think u need USA DDS OR DMD degree to get an admission in any speciality program. UABDENTIST correct me if i am wrong pls.

This is not entirely true ivshah.... coz there are a whole bunch of colleges in each branch that DO ACCEPT foreign trained dentists....
OMFS ..is a tough one though...most colleges for that take only US citizens or Perm ReSi.and to add in they also take only those with US DMD DDS candidates....

BUT.... Like I applied to Ortho... there are a lot of colleges for ortho which accept foreign trained dentists... this may not be every year... AS the Foreign trained dentists...have to be as good as the american candidates...

Its worth a try for sure... if you are interested. Well if a foreign trained dentist..has AEGD or GPR...or even a DDS/DMD...it improves his/her application a lot.

For perio ..as I had earlier mentioned in another post... www.perio.org is a fanstastics site... and you will get to know about which colleges accept internationals...and also what their tuition etc is.

Gud Luck!

Hey
Its a crazy world at PASS. I mean there are tones and thousands of GPR programs.... but most DO NOT take Internationals...
Well happy hunting to those who r looking for GPR...

I am also interested in the answer to your question. I am interested in the orthodontics. As a foreign trained dentist, I found some universities accept the foreign trained dentists. Most of them require boards NBDE part I and part II, plus GRE can Toefl.

Well, as I already mentioned before, there are a lot of colleges which say they accept foreign trained dentists in Ortho, but personally I feel its a tough nut to crack. What i feel important would be a DMD or a DDS or may be GPR /AEGD before you apply to Ortho or OMFS or ENDO in the US.

They do say, they accpet it, however, your application is weighted with the other american applicants. and hence should be equally strong apart from TOEFL and GRE>
Some kind of research is helpful... publications and abstracts in your credit would be great.... Poster and paper presentations at Organizations...and of course related work experience...
You should be able to fulfill this question... "what steps have you taken to work towards your specialty program admission...."
Ofcourse hwo could I miss Part I and II are also essential.

TO find out more about which Ortho Programs accept foreign grads...(WELL ACTUALLY FOR ANY BRANCH). you can look up in the licensure for foreign dentists at the ADA site. www.ada.org (go to education and testing)
and also at www.adea.org/pass
and www.natmatch.com/dentres
there also is www.perio.org and www.aaomp.org
for the others, just type your search in google and you'll find it.
GuD luck!!!

Please, explain me something: can a foreign graduated dentist practice his specialty in US after finishing an accredited post graduate specialty program? How can he get the lisence if he is not a DDS/DMD from accredited dental school? Are there exeptions? Otherwise you can finish the accredited specialty programe and steel not be able to practice in US...
Thank you.

Hi,
Your intution is right... You can practice after your MS in any subject in the US... but yes it should be an accredited program.
You can read more about it in the licensure for Int. dentists at ADA.org website.. they have a separate section for it...
Sorry I forgot to mention....DDS/DMD is not required for a license in those few states...your MS will do for obtaining license
Gud luck!

Most of the times you have to restrict your practice to that specialty, if you are getting license based on specialty program.
e.g. someone did MS in oral pathology, and got a license in one of the state which allows to have a license for a specialist, then you can not do general dentistry, you have to restrict practice to specialty (oral pathology in this case).
Please provide us link, if I am missing something.
Also let us know on your interviews.
Good Luck.

Thats the catch. No wonder most of the students choose to join advanced standing program, though it is repetition.

http://www.ada.org/prof/prac/licensure/us.asp

Hi Explorer2010:

😕 Well let me clarify this doubt right away. Thats the link to Licensure for International dentists. Like I said previously, and as stated in the licensure, there are a bunch of states who allow( "not always" - remember) foreign graduates to practice in those states.. if they have their Foreign DDS.

BUT... as per my last conversation with a source at the ADA international section... I was told that ....this is possible only if you want to pratice in a college or University. At times the license is given only for a very restricited amount of TIME, AREA(cannot pratice outside college) and AUTHORITY. I was told that you may not even be allowed to sign a pathology report.. if you dont have a license in a few states. And then again... these licenses are given only if the board feels there is a shortage of dentists in those areas...

Hence the best bet is to DO DDS/DMD from a US school.. and then go for post grad of your choice. For me, I wouldnt mind doing the Post Grad and returning back to my country....hence I applied to Ortho.

Clarifying again............ This license is given only in some circumstances and it would be best to contact the state board to inquire about it. I apologise for the confusion.

Well I have not heard from the Univs as yet. I doubt I will...(like I said without a DDS its a tough nut to crack). I have recently applied to BU and UPenn..........I hope that atleast works out. I have a 92 part 1, GPA 3.97 , and TOEFL 287. So hoping some miracles occur...

If a foreign trained dentist gets into a speciality program as well as an advanced standing DDS program which one would you choose and why?

I would choose MS obviously!...
If i get in that is... DDS i can do anytime after doing my MS.

Thanks UABDentist. Speciality training allows people to practice only the speciality anywhere in the US. I haven't seen many specialists do GP stuff anyway, So what difference does it make if we have a US DDS or not?

Depends on specialty.

Not true.

Why is it not true? you mean it does not allow you to practice the speciality?

Rules varies from state to state. Not all states allows foreign trained dentists with specialty education/training from US school to practice. Even specialty.
e.g. Specialist can get license in Texas but not in New York, based on specialty training.

There is one old thread which discussed the states where you can practice after specialty training. or, ADA provides that info too. ( I believe available online).

Has anyone gone for an interview for Perio. to Indianapolis ? Any suggestions for those of us who still have it? What is deal regarding the combined M.S./DDS Program ?

There are 7 states that let foreign graduates with speciality programs practice the speciality: Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and Washington. Yeah, you are right, I was under the wrong impression that all states allow you to practice. But, these are a good number of states.

The faculty and the residents are extremely friendly and the entire interview process is very laid back. They also invite only candidates that they are really interested in for the interview. You might have a good chance of getting accepted.

Hey Antique, also let me know about what you have heard about the perio program in Indiana university and how it compares to the programs in other universities.

Thanks and Good luck

I would suggest that you should give the exam in december. but yes... only a comp based wud help as... you get the results faster in that..paper based..u get the results not b4 6 weeks.
that way u can atleast apply to the few schools like NYU and i guess boston..for 2005 admissions..
you might save a year..... give it your best shot.
But well if ur not going to find time...and have other responsiblities..etc.. you might consider giving it when you r ready. it's important to be PREPARED when you give it... rather than taking 2..3 attempts at it.

Hope this is what you asked!
Study hard

The interview was pretty good and I feel the program/faculty is also pretty good compared to other places but it has its own obvious problems (the fees ).
I am still thinking about it! How was your interview and what is ur view about the program?

Dont knw about the BU program... however.. u MAY be allowed to practice dentistry if there is a need in a particular area( probably rural or University based job) They give a very restricted license...

I have heard that the license issued is so tight... that it allows very little flexibility for dentists.. The official told me that he knew of someone, who was not allowed to even sign a pathology report. though he was a oral pathologist for years together... his students could sign it, but he could not....simply because he did not have a license of that kind.

In short, a DDS/DMD is very essential to put your foot down on US land. Howver I think if you get a chance to do ur MS ...definately plunge in for it... DDS can be dun anytime aftr that.

Hope this throws some light on your doubts...
