I would imagine it depends on how severe of a stutter you have. I haven't taken CS yes, taking it April, but Spoken English Proficiency (SEP) is one of the grading criteria and if your stuttering is severe enough, I could see a person loosing points in that category due to it. If you have a mild version or stutter from anxiety, I'm sure if you pause, take a quick breath and apologize for the interruption and continue on with the encounter, you should be fine then.

If you want to practice medicine in the usa, you will have to take the usmle exams.

May require things like tumor board presentations. Not sure, beyond you being self-conscious, what the real harm is though.

Sounds like it's time to research some stuttering coping strategies or seeing if you are able to visit with a speech therapist.

hi every one
i am a medical student(IMG) having a chronic stuttering problem and wish to do usmle.stammering has been an obstacle in my career also but still i have cleared my undergraduate exams with this hurdle.i have this doubt in my mind if this stammering will fail me in CS exam and MD residency interviews in usa ? secondly ,which specialty demands less communication skills?
I've worked with a resident and fellow both with significant stutter and verbal tics. They've done well and obviously made it through tests and interviews.

Easy. Have you tried not stammering?

i mean are stammerers given chance to practice pathology even in usa?every program demands excellent communication skills and stammerers don't have them
Of course you would have the chance to practice in any field so long as your stammering does not prohibit you from meeting the basic technical standards of medicine (including obtaining information in a timely fashion, establishing relationships, relaying information, etc.). If you've made it to being a medical student I certainly assume you have the capability to communicate effectively enough.

I don't think there will be any field where your stuttering will be a plus or even a complete non-factor. Even the fields like pathology and radiology require you to dictate reports and talk to other doctors on the phone or in conferences constantly. I would consider just doing something you like without considering this a big factor, and seeing some speech specialist that could help you with ways to work on your stutter.

In med school there was an old psych attending with a terrible stutter.

Radiology actually might even be harder because you have to dictate.

The IMG p[art is far more of a hindrance to your career than the stuttering part.

See this guy? I knew him before I went to grad school, and he was a brand new attending. Had a grand mal stutter. Didn't stop him.

Whatever Dr. Sattar does
