i was born in the US and lived here all my life... but whenever i talk, i sound like a fob. i stutter and mumble a lot...

does anyone have any advice for me? i want to sound ok during the interview.

thanks

do you mean you stutter and mumble during normal, everyday conversation, or only when you're nervous, ie. during interviews? if you meant the latter, then i'd suggest just doing some mock interviews, i've done some with friends and one through my university's career center....just to get more comfortable answering questions about yourself and about why you want to practice medicine.

when i graduated from college a year ago, my supervisor told me that I can't speak. Like you, I stuttered and mumbled a lot. I even had the tendency to stop in the middle of my sentences and say "you know what i mean." I have done several things to address this weakness of mine. First, I slowed down my speech. Secondly, I tried to pronounce every word i say clearly. And third, practice (force yourself to speak in front of a crowd). My advice to you for the interview is to prepare and formulate what you want to say before you speak. Don't try to memorize your answers, but know what you want to say and how you want to say it.

Yes. Join a Toastmaster's group in your area. My friend joined, and within a month, you could tell the difference.

LOL. You know about Toastmaster's?

😀

You have to keep the group on the down low, dude.

i had a horrible speach problem growing up, it took 7 years of intensive speach therapy to straighten it all out. when i was in high school i decided to make myself do things in order to boost my confidence when speaking to anyone. i tried out for a radio broadcasting team, before i tried out i practiced for weeks with the script and somehow i got on the team. i was in speaking events, plays and so on. if anyone ever told me that i couldn't do it, then i practiced harder just to show them i could. now i'm the president of a 600 member club and i have no problem speaking in front of them. when i do get nervous my speech problems tend to come up again. so...i have a few rules that i follow. these rules help me when i speak in public, i hope that these will help you too

1. SLOW DOWN and collect your thoughts
2. if there is a word that you am nervous about pronunciating correctly then think ahead and substitute it with another word
3. if you make a little speech bobble, just go on and act like nothing went wrong. the odds are that the person listening to you will never notice
4. BE CONFIDENT, when your speaking in front of a board don't look at your hands. i noticed that if i ever looked down and lost my thought then odds were i would start to make mistakes when i spoke

so these things help me out. just take deep breaths before you go in, and you'll do great!

Did I say Toastmaster's? I meant toastmakers...yeah, they teach you how to grill bagels/toast/english muffins...great program... 😉

It's a great program for those who have english as their second language.

go drinking with the law students.

i'm a poor speaker.. i cant talk sophisticated like those law students.. i am not eloquent at all.. i say "ya know" and "like" a lot, and sometimes whatever i say doesnt make any sense because i know what i want to say, but i cant put it into words

toastmasters costs money.. which i dont have.. it also requires time. i dont know if i'll have time... how long do you have to be in it before you start to see some improvement?

Is your problem due to nervousness?

Most people write the same way they talk. From what I can tell, you pause a lot, even in your posts. Like everyone else said, just formulate what you want to say before you say it. That way, your pause can be before you speak rather than in the middle of your sentence. Personally, I only get nervous when making speeches. What's really embarassing is when my voice actually starts shaking (ugh..the memories). However, I'm completely normal one on one or even in a small group.

does anyone have a problem with losing their train of thought? This happens to me only when im nervous/stressful situation. Any solutions other than slowing down?
