Hi

I am an undergraduate student and have a cum gpa of 2.85 and a DAT score of AA19 and 17/Pat. I spoke to the director od admissions for NYU and she really discouraged me from applying. She didn't make me feel to good about my gpa and she said that even applying early wont help. I think she's just being mean for no reason. Does anybody have any kind of advice, I dont know what to do I am so worried and I dont want to go to a masters program. Dental school is my dream. HELP!! Please!!!! 😕 🙁 🙁

Your options:

- Retake your DAT and see if you can do better. If you can get a spectacular score well above 20/20, that might make up for your lowish GPA. This doesn't always work, of course.

- Postpone applying for a year and take some upper-level courses as a post-bacculaureate or masters candidate and make sure you do well in them. At the same time you might consider retaking the DAT. This is probably the surer way of doing it.

If dental school is your dream, then you should be willing to make some sacrifices to attain it.

Good luck.

just apply and see what happens...numbers aren't everything
your DAT's not too bad, but maybe you might want to consider retaking it... or you probably can go to an easy college/CC/JC and take a few classes this summer and boost up your gpa 🙂

NYU is usually people's backup school and easiest school to get into, so if the director of admissions is telling you to not apply, thats not good news. I agree with Stargirl and just apply for the hell of it, but expect to get rejected. Thus, use the year to upgrade your GPA and DAT......but you never know....you might get in this year.....just be responsible about it and expect the worst case scenario.....if you get in, great! if you dont, at least you will be ready to go for the next round!

There are many variables here that could affect whether or not your application is at all viable. Do you have a strong upward trend in grades? How does your course work look? Have you taken and performed well in many upper division science classes? Is your DAT consistant, or do you have weak areas? Students with below a 3.00 get into dental school all the time, but remember that every individual is unique! If you have shown little promise in your academic career than why would a school want to look at your app? You have to PROVE that you are worthy.

My advice would be to read the <3.00 thread...it has some staid and honest advice for someone in your situation. 👍

I resent the statement that NYUCD is the easiest school to get into. I know it could be people's backup due to the expenses. However, it is most certainly not the easiest school to get into; afterall it is a top medical institution

Luck has nothing to do with it.

The people who are weeded out from NYU got weeded out because they are weed-- They didn't study, failed a bunch of courses, and got slews of D's.

Guess what? It's the same at almost every dental school. If a person fails, the person gets kicked out. What a novel concept, eh? 🙄

Right on. I don't know where everyone graduated from, but as a graduate of one of the best undergrad institutions in the nation, I can tell you that if you don't see people getting weeded out during the 4 years, your school is probably too easy. No flames please, just sharing my observations.

I hope you did not let the advisor know your full name. As I know, some dental schools will create a file for every person who is interested in their schools. Every email or letter will be collected in the file.

I visit Loma Lina one two years ago before I submit my AADSAS application. I was required to write down some information before seeing the advisor, and she wrote down something and comments on the form during our conversation. She said they will keep this "several" years and would attach it to my file if I apply. I did not think doing well in that conversation, so finally, I did not apply there. While I interviewed in UCSF, the professor said they will choose the student who shows more interested in UCSF based on past contacts if there are applicants with the same ranking.

If you did not give her your full name or the infor which can locate you, then I would say you should have good chance to get into NYU with you 19 DAT. However, since you are still in undergraduate, you should take more courses to boot your GPA to at least 3.0 and above.

I would retake the DAT. They have changed many things here and one is the admission policy. The reason they said you have no chance here is because they require students with under a 3.0 to have 20's across the board. 19 is good but its not 20.

Apply to some other schools...sure you will get in some where if you have a strong application besides your numbers

As far as weeding out. The people that get kicked out of here deserve it. They do not study or party too much. There are a few kids in my class that were forced into here because of their parents and are now doing bad because they really hate it. If you do your work its not that hard to pass...but work is req. on your behalf. Do not expect to study 15 hours for an exam and pass. This is professional school and you have to prepare for the exams

Hey, as far as I know, there are at least 50 other dental schools to consider.
Dont let 1 sch get u down. At least now you know your weakness, so it is quite important to pull your GPA up. If you are graduating this year, I would consider taking course part time or full time at a community college. If you are not graduating, just think about every possible ways to get good grades. And then, get more dental and research experience if possible.
