Has anyone ever heard of some thing of that sort? Like a dentist working for a professional sports team. I'm very interested so please enlighten me. It would practically be a dream come true to incorporate sports into dentistry

Yes a dentist I knew in Buffalo is the team dentist for the Buffalo Bills. He still has his own practice but is also the team dentist.

Yes. But all of them do sports dentistry on the side, even the ones that have the sweet gigs with pro sports teams. Their private practice is the main gig. Sports dentistry alone isn't enough to make a full time career out of. Being a dentist for something like a hockey team doesn't pay much, it's more of an insurance policy for the team. For example, "just in case" some one gets hit in the mouth during a game. Also, becoming a dentist for a professional team is so hard to come by, that most involved in "sports dentistry' are affiliated with university teams and athletics.

I shadowed a dentist for a while in Norman, OK who was the team dentist for the OU football team. He made their mouth guards in his office and worked on the team as-needed. But it was just out of his regular office so like others have said, it wasn't his main gig at all, just a side deal.

You could probably increase your chances by working for a university with a big sports team. One of our faculty takes care of the sports injuries, makes mouthguards, etc., but s/he is also a clinical instructor on the dental school faculty.

Other than doing custom mouthguards, the only other "sports dentistry" position would probably be an on-call or on site dentist for an NHL team. I don't even know if that exists.
