I've entered the St. John's Pharm. D. program and I'm a senior in high school.
The program is six years long (0-6?). However, is there any way you can turn it into a five-year program or even four-year program? I know that there is not PCAT required.
How does the AP credit policy work out and can you take classes during the summer to speed up the program?

i know someone who goes there. you can take classes during the summer but my friend thinks you have to pay more for summer sessions. also, she's not sure if you can take chem classes during summer, but core courses like philosophy and theology you can definitely take.
you can't take ap credits for chemistry, but you can for other subjects such as math and english.
i don't think there's a way for you to change 0-6 to anything else in the same school, although the school will be doing the 2-4 starting 2009... If you want to do 2-4, you may want to transfer. however, most 2-4 require pcat.

Hey, this person you know who goes there, does she know how anyone can shorten the program? Better yet, does she know anyone who has? It would be great if I could take an year out of the program by using AP credit and summer classes. I do, however, expect to take most of my science and math classes there (bio, chem, physics, math). It's just the core curriculum that I hope doesn't bog me down.

Hello. I am going to St. John's in the fall for pharmacy. The question you are asking was asked before and so I believe I can give a 'correct' answer.

Basically you can only get AP credit Math and English. English requires a 3 and any math requires a 5 in order to get credit. You can take summer classes for some of your core and even some pharmacy courses are also offered in the summer.

But there is no way to shorten the program from six years to anything less. If you get AP credit or take summer classes, you are only going to have less classes to take. Plus you are completely done with non pharm core classes by your second year.

Hey, was wondering if there is any truth to them going to 2-4yr program since I would love to apply to this school but right now, I would be a transfer student & wouldn't be able to. I looked but didn't see any info about it. Btw, I am happy to have found this board-it has helped me so much in deciding what to do & giving me encouragement about my decision to go for pharmacy.

During the freshman intro course the DEAN stated despite the rumors of changing the program to 2+4 or 7 years that is not true. You can NOT shorten the program but you can relieve your class load by taking courses in the summer but only the basic stuff like english, theology and philosophy. The STJU curriculum is not standard. They have accelerated courses so other credits can not be transferred in because of this. Trust me I know... I have tried.. So the answer is 0-6 only.. sorry you will have to stick it out.. look at it this way at least they are not adapting to the new 7 yr pharmacy program.

From my experience, you don't want to shorten your program to 5 years. That would entail taking summer classes (hypothetically, even if you could shorten it, and in most 0-6 programs you can't), and summers could just be used getting experience and doing internships and getting hours. You would pay about the same amt. for a 5-year program and a 6-year program, because of the summer classes. I think going year-round would just burn me out.

Plus, 6-year programs are very inflexible, so you probably wouldn't be able to do it anyway.
