Incoming OMS-1 trying to find something interesting to do next summer. I was browsing some research opportunities in my home state and naturally St. Jude is where interesting things occur.

A minute later I read they only accept students from LCME schools. DO schools are not accredited by the LCME, is this correct?

If correct, any reason why?

Any OMS students have luck finding research? I would like to try out clinical but basic should be fine as well.

Correct, DO schools are accredited by COCA, not the LCME. The LCME is for MD-granting institutions.

Finding research is still possible. You might even try emailing the listed contact person at St. Jude. Websites can often go neglected for many years, so the LCME-only requirement might be old. Or they might decide to take you anyway if you can demonstrate enough interest. No harm in asking, really.

I will try. But they did spell out that it would be tough, have to get program director and some other higher Up's permission.

Make it clear that you are a US medical student and not an IMG. Some places say LCME-only to stop the tens of thousands of IMGs from applying to them for research.

It's possible they still mean explicitly LCME-only, in which case, I'd contact your state osteopathic board or the AOA and just let them know. Obviously private hospitals can do what they want, but a random letter from one of those groups could be enough to sway a hospital one way or the other.

This is really great advice.

I passed on applying for a research stipend for an "LCME-only" position and in hindsight, should have explored the issue further. I still got the spot but funding would have been great.

I'd be very interested in finding out if they allowed DO students to rotate. Seems like a great place for a research rotation.
