St Lukes, PA is a good community program. Its about an hour north of Philly, cute little town near Allentown. The hospital is pretty wealthy, so the residents are all pretty happy - and the ones I know are all really good. The PD is also really nice, and is very big on ultrasound. I didn't actually rotate in EM up there, but I did a 3 month surgery rotation up there as a med student.

One caveat... if you didn't already know, its an MD/DO hospital. The program was about half and half last time I checked. Nothing wrong with that, just something to be aware of.

Hope that helps!

Scrubbs,

Thanks for the info. I'm interviewing up there next month and just wanted to get an idea of what the program was all about. Oh, and odoreater...sorry about snaking your thread.

It looks like this tread was resurrected so I don't know if anyone is interested. 😀

Hi Roja, I am applying to the St. Lukes NYC program and would be very interested in any info you could provide on the residency program there. (how competitive, resident satisfaction, reputation relative to other NYC programs, etc.) Thanks!

EMApplicant- I am bedding now in a few because I have a morning shift, but here goes:

1-3 year program, department of its own.
great benefits. There is subsidized housing (three buildings both within 1 block of one of the 2 hospitals). Decent insurance (no contract bidding), ACEP membership, $500 bucks a year for CME, any confrence that has an abstract = free ride to confrence, jitney that goes between the two hospitals (every hour). 4 weeks of vacation a year (in two week blocks)

Two sites: St. Lukes- Level 1 trauma- blunt low speed (ped vs vehicle), lots of 'public' type patients (near harlem), also lots of columbia patients. Peds ER run by Peds EM trained attendings (no peds residency as there are no peds residents).

Roosevelt- more of a private hospital, more exposure to private attendings, etc. Nuerosurg unit.

Together both sites see about 120,000/year.

VERY stron U/S exposure (I will be RDMS before my residency is over)

PGY-1: 3weeks anesthesia/1week u/s, 1CCU, 1MICU, 1 OB, 2 mos Peds ED, rest is ED time.

PGY-2: Ortho, Tox (ny poison control), 2weeks EMS, 2 weeks U/S, 1 mos elective, 1 mos Peds ED, rest main ED.

Pgy-3: ED, one month peds elective.

We get 1 research day a month second and third year.

I know I am forgetting stuff.... ask away....

Overall, residents are very happy... we all have alot of fun together. there is tons of research if you want ti (bench and clinical)....

Hey Roja, Thanks! That is definitely a big help. I may get back to you on more specifics later. Get some rest! 🙂

Hey Roja, thanks for all the info. Do you know how much the housing costs per month?

The housing cost varies based on 1-which building you are in and 2- what size apartment youc an get.

I think the studios run about 900/mo (they are really big for NYC studios.. no shoe boxes). I am in a very larte 2 bedroom with a large living room, good sized kitchen, entry hall, etc (1200 sq feet about) and I pay 1600/mo.

No bills. all three buildings have doormen.
