May you all incur craniocervical disarticulations and require rectal bags for the rest of your lives. Who the hell likes Palo Alto anyway? ;-)

Hey Ligament,

Congratulations on finishing up your residency in a great program in a beautiful city! I have been to Ann Arbor and can't say enough about the people, the atmosphere, and the academics. My only thing is the Midwest weather...a little too cold too long. If it weren't for the weather, I think the Midwest would be amongst MY most favorite places to live!

As for choosing Stanford, it was not a difficult choice. A world class medical center surrounded by a high-caliber university that has unlimited access to some of the greatest minds both within and outside of the medical world, much like U of M.

However, its location in Palo Alto places it within easy drives of both SF and San Jose. You have all the outdoor activities ANYONE can imagine practically all year round because of the mild temperate weather. Palo Alto boasts among the best bike paths in the Bay Area. The beach is a short drive south in Santa Cruz. 4 hours NE of SF is Lake Tahoe. 3 hours east of SF is Yosemite National Park. Monterey and Carmel are beautiful escapes from the big cities. Just 15-20 minutes south of Palo Alto is San Jose where you have all the amenities of any big city (maybe more...never really explored or spent much time there.) I have lived for several months in SF during rotations....and let me tell you.....I need a new section for this.

SF:
-Food...find a great restaurant at just about every turn of your head. Not your national chain either....the authentic ethnic cuisines that are mainly holes-in-the-wall, but are so good that you don't care about any glitzy or upscale 'ambiance.'
-Nightlife...Just check out the local independent weekly and you have your pick of unlimited events from theater and opera to local concerts to charity runs/marathons/bicycling events to neighborhood farmers markets. On any given day, I finish up rotations around 4pm and can enjoy a run through the city, a nice dinner down the street, and still plan to fit in a movie/local concert.
-Outdoors...'nuff said.
-Shopping...the amazing diversity of the city provides you with not only the international brand names you can find in big cities, but bountiful independent/ethnic shops that can satisfy the most demanding shopper.

So, you might be thinking..."What about Palo Alto?" Many members of the Stanford community find plenty to do on the 8,000+ acre campus. And if you feel like taking a break from the university campus, there are small communities to go out to dine and hangout.

I thought I'd take the opportunity that Ligament provided to let fellow SDNers know what's in and around Palo Alto, the community adjacent to Stanford.

Feel free to ask any more questions, but I don't know the area well enough to tell you details/specifics.

I started this thread in the hopes of getting to know current/future colleagues at Stanford. I also figured this would be a great place for potential applicants to inquire about the program. Everyone is welcome to start a discussion on this thread about PM&R and/or specifically about Stanford. Please remember that PM&R gal and I will NOT start until summer 2007 so can't tell you as much as any residents on the Forum.

👍 to all that matched this year!

Dude, I was kidding. Palo Alto ****ing kicks ass like a General Electrics minigun (look it up). Beats ANY midwest ANYTHING, anytime.

Just interviewed at Stanford for fellowship. You guys got a wilkes-bashford and neiman marcus a few hundred feet from the god damn hospital, and the great taco trucks south of costco, and the great ramen houses in the area.

Bay area rocks!

OK, the mexican food in Chicago and the music in the midwest is better than California, but that is it. Oh, and we midwesterners are not libtard socialists.

I know Liggie....I figured by your ";-)" at the end. It's all good! I should probably let you do the talking since I didn't even know there are neiman marcus and wilkes something or other near the hospital! When do you find out about fellowship? Best of luck and let us know if you come to Stanford!

You've got any words of wisdom to throw our way?

Mexican food in Chicago is better than in California? Maybe just in northern California, but hopefully you're not comparing it to SoCal!

I feel lonely that most likely there aren't any UC-Davis residents here. I need to get more people on SDN maybe.. heh heh. Stanford's close enough though. Does it help that one of my old classmates will be starting at Stanford as a PGY-2 in a few months?

PM&R is very broad. If you end up hating inpatient, you can do out. If you hate adults, you can do peds.

A lot of the rehab stuff can be depressing, especially peds and SCI, but keep in mind that you are helping people that otherwise would be thrown away in nursing homes. Hopefully you can help them, that is. That is not always possible. But that's medicine.

Best of all, there are very few of us physiatrists in the US, so job prospects are usually quite good.

I've found PM&R to be very rewarding. You'll enjoy it. I really like the flexibility.

The Neiman Marcus and Wilkes whatever are in the Stanford Mall- just next to the hospital. Not that I have ever been there or anything...
Some more thoughts on Palo Alto:
Anyone ever been to Hobie's for breakfast?
If you like pancakes or blueberry coffee cake, theirs are the best! Can't wait to go there again.
How about that Dish Trail on campus for running/walking/biking?? It is challenging, but has some beautiful views!
And if anyone is onto going to wineries (hopefully some of you are- otherwise I will have to go by myself 😉 ,) there is Thomas Fogarty just a few miles off campus ( just make sure you get a designated driver back if you are doing any tasting- the road is quite hazardous)!
Anyone else have any thoughts on P.A./Stanford/?
Hope to meet some more who are going there!

Melancholy- who do you know that is starting there as a PGY-2??

Hi,

I got matched at Stanford. Nice to meet you here. I hope we can share information until the program starts in 2007.

BTW,did you get any email or mail from the program?

Glad to meet someone else going to Stanford! I haven't gotten any email or mail yet.
Where are you from?

Hey I PM'd you guys who matched at Stanford. I'll be there in 2007 for ophthalmology. The ophtho residency is small (3/year), so I'd love to meet any and all residents who will be in sunny Palo Alto.

I'll be in Ann Arbor in 1 yr, can't wait 👍

Just out of curiousity, why did everyone pick Stanford? I'm sure there are a million reasons but the top 3 would be great!

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'll give you my pull for Stanford. Things I considered when looking at a program in no particular order: research opps, location, balance.

LOCATION: Wanted to be in NorCal - weather isn't as warm as SoCal like d...0626, but I prefer cooler than warmer. The things to do as mentioned above.

Research Opps: Interested in research...think the field has a lot that has yet to be discovered/researched/developed. This was where I had a hard time defending Stanford. RIC, UPitt, UTSA (of the places I interviewed) are powerhouses in PM&R research...they get my utmost respect! I think Stanford has the potential that has yet to be fully harnessed - great minds of medicine in just about all fields, unlimited resources for research from all medical and graduate departments, awesome attendings in PM&R that graduated from top caliber PM&R programs. I think it would have been easy for me to find/pickup an ongoing research project at RIC, Pitt, UTSA within the department, but at Stanford, I will have to seek out those opportunities and maybe even propose my own project. In the end, I think the same opportunities for research are available.

Balance: Rotated through Stanford as a student. Felt a true sense of balance in terms of in/outpt exposure. Model systems for TBI and SCI at SCVMC (the county hospital) give you a strong basis for inpt medicine. In addition, this hospital has a rehab trauma unit where you learn/care for acute trauma patients. Some programs [residents] I interviewed at gave ME the sense that they wanted nothing to do with medicine issues....sometimes because they were bothersome, othertimes because they felt uncomfortable handling them. Didn't get this sense with the residents st Stanford. MSK is strong here...learn with ortho guys.

Another thing that I stress again...I went to school in the Midwest for college and medschool. Loved a lot of things about it. However, I needed a break from the weather. I love the outdoors....and in the Bay area...I'VE GOT IT ALL YEAR ROUND! 😍

Hey Engram, Pastrami King and PM&R gal....heard of anyone else going to Stanford?

I got THE letter today from Dr. Date. It's official!

Okay....so what are your plans for transitional if any of you are doing it? I posted my "ideal" under the Intern Year thread

Hey Eddo,
I haven't heard from anyone else going to Stanford. I emailed Dr. Date to ask her, and she told me she would be sending out a list.. but I haven't gotten anything yet.
THE letter was great! 🙂
It is finally sinking in that soon I will be in Cali!
Your "ideal" TY sounds good to me. I haven't given it that much thought yet...
Question: Is there any time off between when we end TY and start PM&R? As I understand, TY ends June 30 and PGY2 starts July 1??
Or do we have to take a week of vacation at the end of TY to move across the country?

Hey gang,

I think it depends on your TY and how you schedule it. If you wanted, you could frontload your TY year then have easy rotations towards the end. I'd probably save some vacation time towards the end as well.

Other than that advice from Axm397....I can't think of much else unless you feel your brother can help you ease the transition. If you plan on flying out there before you get a car, etc...then you might be better off just shipping most of your belongings via US postal service's third-class (parcel post) where you can ship up to 70# (at least the last time I used the service) for about $20.

Hope you are enjoying the senioritis!

Hi all,

I am an MSIII, planning to try and match in PMR, and I would love to return to the bay area. Any hints to that might help me to get there? I.e what did you think you did right to get into the big "S"? also does anyone know the stats for people who got in? I.e board scores, #number of honors, research, electives. etc. thanks!

Los Angeles is a real city?

geez
a whole lot of stanford hype here
stanford residents were the most disgruntled ones I met during interviews and several said straight out, one even during lunch, that they weren't happy with the program and didn't recommend going there. Not to mention it's under the ortho department and doesn't have it's own department.
I wasn't impressed with the program

Gauss,

I chose to go into PMR because of my experience at Stanford. The residents with whom I rotated were having a blast. Their credentials were exceptional and they came from great schools. I'm sorry that you took the words of one unhappy resident to heart and that you failed to see what makes Stanford's program unique and great. In the end, it's what you make of it. We will all be part of the same community. I hope you enjoy wherever you will be going for residency, and I am sure it's a great program as well.

FYI - Many programs are linked with ortho and some even with Neuro. That's a plus in my book to have more resources and cooperation.

Internship has been all-consuming in terms of time and energy. Sorry I haven't written for a while. I am doing internship at UMDNJ (University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey) - decent hours and I am certainly learning the ropes of IM in the depth that I want. It should come in handy when we get to manage patients in the Traumatic Rehab Center at SCVMC hospital.

The East Coast weather just drains the heck out of you with the humidity. Can't wait to come to CALI!

Hope all is well. Looking forward to getting the party started in Palo Alto. Take it easy. Any body got an idea of where to live in the area?

Eddie
