Does anyone who is familiar with San Francisco and Palo Alto have any suggestions as to how I should get from San Francisco to Palo Alto and back to San Francisco Airport again? Is that Caltrain thing easy to use?

If you're going from the city itself to Palo Alto, CalTrain is fantastic.. then just take the Marguerite (Stanford free shuttle) to Stanford campus (it stops right in front of the Palo Alto stations - one of them is called California, can't remember what the other is called. If you're going from SFO (airport) to Stanford, taking a cab or super shuttle (cheaper) is the only way unless you rent a car. Unfortunately, our rapid transit line that connects the airport to CalTrain isn't finished yet. Also, CalTrain only runs on the weekdays now.

good luck!

hey, my friend is interviewing at stanford in a few weeks. does anyone know what time the interview day ends? or the latest it could possibly end? and how long it takes to get to the san francisco airport?

You can actually take CalTrain from SFO to Stanford. There's a free shuttle that CalTrain operates from the Milbrae station. You just catch the shuttle (ask the ground transportation info. counter) from the baggage claim area, and it will take you to the Milbrae station. From there, you can take the CalTrain to the Palo Alto/Stanford station or California. The free Stanford shuttle, Marguerite, stops at both stations and it will take you to Stanford campus, including the medical center. Of course, if this sounds too complicated, you can always take the SuperShuttle... but I think taking CalTrain will only cost you a few bucks and the shuttles are free! The hotels around Stanford and Palo Alto tend to be expensive, but hopefully you'll be able to stay with a student host. Have fun! I hear the weather is gorgeous out there right now. 🙂

Is the stanford shuttle free for everyone, or do you have to have a Stanford ID in order to ride it?

The Marguerite is free to the general public-- I believe it takes you around some parts of Palo Alto as well. Have fun!

Does anyone know anything about student hosts at Stanford? I don't see anything on the web page, and I am going next week. To make matters worse, I got a Sat. night stay to redue the cost of my ticket (still more than $400).

im from san jose. san jose to stanford is 45-60 minutes. i have never took the caltrans or their shuttle but i dont know. the way to stanford is pretty easy though. take the embarcadero exit and then turn left onto palm street. it will take u right into stanford. ull be in fornt of the church in fornt of you and the tower will be on your left. or u can take the back route into the med school. you can go here: http://www.stanford.edu/home/visitors/directions.html

it tell u how to get there, by caltrain, the stanford shuttle, highway or from an airport.

here is a site about the shuttle: http://transportation.stanford.edu/marguerite/MargueriteShuttle.shtml
good luck.

Call the admission office -- they have a list of students who are willing to host applicants. I'm sure you'll find somewhere to stay!
