I posted this in another forum but perhaps this is more appropriate.

If I start my 4 year college career over at another school and not use the credits I've earned already, can I NOT send those to med school??

Sorry, doesn't work that way. Even if your GPA does not transfer to a new school you must still supply transcripts from all schools attended to AMCAS.

That's correct, all college level courses MUST be reported.

How would they know?

Yep, you're stuck with those grades.

Here is what I did...

I was enrolled in a university in Canada for three years and three different majors; Engineering, Computer Science and Chemistry...I only had a 2.1 gpa because of personal reasons...I decided I wanted to be a doctor so I enrolled in at an US School in the biology program and I completed a 4 year degree in only two years with a 4.0 gpa...I am currently an applicant and I found out that they could not find out about my earlier years in Canada but I decided to reveal the transcript anyways because I feel it will help me stand out to an admissions committee when they see that I have overcome all of my obstacles...don't fret, if you can prove that you can handle the work and do well on your MCAT you will get in somewhere...just try to take a different major and redo your pre-req's...good luck!

Texas has a Fresh Start Program--requirements listed at the following link:

http://www.utsystem.edu/tmdsas/frshstart.htm

Don't know if any other states have this--but you could check into it.

Thats pretty interesting. Wouldnt apply to AMCAS and the bulk of med schools but you can start over again at least for the Texas state schools.

a) They would see the big time gap (i.e., what the heck did you do in between high school three years ago and now?). They may not be able to demand transcripts from Canada, but that won't matter -- they'll just not accept you and problem solved.

b) It's a question of ethics. If you only do the right think when people are watching, maybe you don't belong in medicine.

The AMCAS requires that you send all college transcripts.

Can you find a way around this by cheating or being dishonest? yes, of course, but very bad idea.

Why redo your whole degree just to get into med school? That doesn't make sense.
That would have been a whole heck of alot easier for me and faster... but in Texas you have to wait 10 years to do accademic fresh start...

Here is my story, maybe it can help.

I started college when I was 17 and ended up hating it. But instead of withdrawing from classes I simply stopped going thinking I would never go back to school again. Well of course I got 2 F's and a few other bad grades from a previous semester bringing my GPA to a nice 1.2 (no joke).

I went back to school when I was 30 years old and I transfered my old grades to the new school I had been attending where I had a 3.75 GPA and yes it dropped my GPA down to a 2.7 I have since worked my butt off making mainly A's and a few B's and one C and now my GPA is a a 3.13 which totally sucks but that is just how it is. I have a positive outlook and believe that the adcoms will see beyond that stupid 17 year old to the person I am now at almost 31, and I have shown I have rose above those lame grades and I am not the same person whatsoever 🙂 Who knows, maybe my past mistakes will help me in the long run.

I still have 40 more hours to go in my degree program plus I am taking classes that interest me above that and I know I will do well in to bring my GPA back up to a respectable and competitive level. I don't worry about it, there is nothing I can do about it anyways except do my best. Even though it sucks to see my GPA drop down, I feel good knowing I did the right thing and it will not be something I will have to worry about them finding out, etc.

And yes they can find out. I have a friend who was in an RN program who didn't transfer over a few credits that were bad, she made it into her second year of nursing school (which is not easy) and they walked in one day, told her to get up out of class and come with them and that was the end of her nursing career. You don't want that to happen!
