Hello, Im starting Nova in august and Im not quite sure what I should be doing now, in this lazy but beautiful summer im having, to prepare myself. Should I begin looking at dental anatomy, or should i look at other information??? any suggestions? 😀 😀

Hey Dr. Feel Good,

Welcome to the Nova 2008 class. We've got quite a thread over in the pre-dent forum called Nova 2008. Here's a link....

As for what you should start studying, I'm not really sure. I bought Dental Decks for the NDBE par I and I casually look at those once and a while, otherwise, you should just enjoy your summer! Perhaps one of the upperclassmen on this board will have a better idea of what to study.

Are you serious??? I feel like such a slacker now!! I havent done anything, nor do I plan to until the first day of school. 😀

If it makes you feel better, I looked at most of the biochem/physiology because I already know those. Then, I selected a few from the dental anatomy section, put a rubber band around them, and placed them in my backpack.........

where they have been for the past TWO WEEKS! So don't worry. At least you don't have to lug the big ol box around. 😀

Please do not touch any books. Enjoy this summer coz I promise you it will be your last one for a very long time... say till retirement.

AMMD is right. Although, having the Decks is a good thing. I wish I had those earlier in the year. If you Nova peeps take the Boards after the first year, then be sure to review your Decks every now and then, specifically for the subjects you are studying in class. That way you can at least gear the bulk of your studies towards the material that is emphasized on the Boards.

But as far as studying over the summer, don't do it. You won't know what to study or how deep to go. "Required" texts are rarely required, and quite often not even necessary to get an A in the course.

I'm not a dental student yet, but I've been (almost all the way) through grad school and my opinion is that it's never a bad idea to leaf through a book or two. You never know what's going to seep into your head, stay there, and become useful later on.

Of course, you can't know at this point what is going to be useful and what isn't, as Gavin pointed out, but I'd say if you're curious and want to look at some first-year material, go for it!

This may be the last summer you can relax and do nothing, but another way of looking at it is that it's the last summer you can (a) study at a leisurely pace with no pressure, (b) study only what you think is interesting, and (c) stop when you get sick of it!

Hey, thanks for the info, jessica!!! Where did you buy those dental decks? And what was the damage to your wallet????

Hey Natalie,

I bought them from www.dentaldecks.com for ~$200. You could really save $$$ on shipping if you live near a dental school and stop in the bookstore to buy them. Make sure that you don't study too hard!

Do nothing but enjoy your summer. Studying won't help much because everything is amended by your professors. Unless it gives you peace of mind, my advice would be to enjoy the calm before the storm.

Welcome to the Nova Dental family!

Are you kidding? You are about to start the most hellacious 4 years of your life (at least that's how it has been described to me by many DDS)...you should be relaxing and enjoying all the free time you can stand!
