So I took calculus in undergrad but not stats. BU is one of my top schools and it requires stats. I don't know what to do! I know the AADSAS asks if you're planning on more courses but as of now, I don't know if I would be able to take it anywhere anytime soon (this summer or in Fall). Do I need to give them the specifics of when and where I'm taking it??
Please help!!!

Thing is, you have to check if BU accepts CC credit because some schools don't.

Is there no CC nearby that offers it?

There is, but I may not be able to take it until spring 2015. I don't know how I could report on AADSAS that I WILL be taking it at some point but I don't know the specifics yet.

You can just put it as in progress for spring2015. If you don't take it, just let schools know during academic update and or individually

Correct me if I'm wrong, but BU requires 2 semester of math. One of the semesters MUST be calculus. I don't see Stats as a requirement, however they say that it may be used as the second semester. So I'm under the impression that if you took Calc 1 and Calc 2 you should be fine (assuming your school had both).

Quote from BU's site: "A statistics course will fulfill the second mathematics course requirement."

I didn't know they had this kind of requirement either. I guess I shoud've checked..Fat chance, but does biostatistics count? It is a bio elective though, but incorporated statistics

According to the ADEA AADSAS Handbook, BU does not accept CC credits for prerequisites. Then I looked on their website, and it specified that CC credits could not be used for science coursework (biology, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physics), so I guess it could technically be used for a math prerequisite.

I agree with @pinkster that BU does not require a statistics course. If you go to their website (http://www.bu.edu/dental/admissions/dmd/req/) they very clearly state that they require two semesters of math, with one of them being calculus, and that statistics would fulfill the second requirement. So if you've had 2 semesters of math and taken one calculus course you've fulfilled the requirement. No stats needed. I would venture to guess that they put that down as a clarification, because at my college for example stats was offered through each department separately so I think that's why they might have felt the need to state that stats could be used if someone had taken it.

Additionally, I think that putting down planned coursework for Spring 2015 is fine. If that's the most current information you have, then put the coursework down for Spring 2015. You should be able to make adjustments to any coursework you have taken during the Academic Update period in Dec/Jan. And honestly, having not yet taken one course until Spring of the year in which you apply will not be cause for dental schools to accept/reject you when there are so many other, more important components of the application. But you should definitely put down any missing coursework because they will want to see that you are planning on completing the prerequisites before matriculation. It's what everyone else does and things turn out just fine. 🙂

Here is the info from their website (http://www.bu.edu/dental/admissions/dmd/req/).

"Math including calculus 2 semesters (6-8 credits) or 3 quarters
  • Advanced Placement credits will be accepted if the degree-granting institution awarded college credit toward the bachelor’s degree.
  • At least one calculus course is required.
  • A statistics course will fulfill the second mathematics course requirement."

I think Biostatistics should count. That's clearly a stats course to me. But if you really want to make sure, you should call the admissions office and ask.

You should definitely research the prerequisite requirements of all the schools you are planning on applying to. I realized that I'm going to have to take another English course even though I have AP credit and lots of writing intensive coursework because I'd rather be safe than sorry.
