If you attend undergrad in a state different than your state of residency, would schools located in former give you IS preference? Not necessarily in terms of tuition, but interviews/acceptances. Perhaps it's more likely if you play up the roots you've established there?

I would look up the state of interest school's threads from last year and see if they verify residency on their secondary. You could also call the school and ask how and when they check residency. I think some schools just take your word and others ask for documentation

^I agree. It depends on the school. You should contact them for specific info. (Or tell us what school it is and someone here might be able to help.) You can also check MSAR to get a sense of how many out of state students are accepted to this particular school. You would definitely still be considered out of state since you're not a legal resident.

Generally, I would think that state schools that have a commitment to educating future doctors within their state would place more emphasis on legal residence than where you went to undergrad. (In part, it's a funding issue.) But if you feel you have strong ties to the state and see yourself living and practicing there, it can't hurt to discuss that in your app and your interviews!
