I lived in Oregon before going to Michigan for my undergrad. My parents still live in Oregon, but I've lived mostly in Michigan for the last 2+ years, going back to Oregon only for vacations. As far as med school applications is concerned, which state should be my residency state?

Have you been paying instate or out-of-state tuition? Are you financially independent from your parents? If you have been paying out of state tuition and are not financially independent from your parents, you should probably claim oregon as your state of residency, especially if you went home during breaks. if you have received instate tuition, you have to claim residency in michigan. if you are financially independent but either went to a private school or paid out-of-state tuition, you could theoretically choose...where are you hoping to go to med school? if you're hoping to stay in michigan...shoot for michigan - you can still prove you have strong ties to oregon.

It sounds like your state of residency is Oregon. Usually states don't let you establish residency if you are there only for educational purposes. I'm not 100% sure though.

Have you been to Mackinac Island? Isn't it great? I lived there for a year...

It is actually your choice for residency, but you have to choose one or the other. I spoke with my dean of prehealth and schooling in a state is sufficient to let you gain residency there.

duke...This is the case only in select states. You should check with UMich and MSU to see if they consider you a resident. You don't want to have no state schools to apply to. I would put Oregon.

Michigan is hardcore about state of residency. If you pay out of state you have no choice but to put Oregon, because Michigan will NOT consider you in-state for medical if you paid out of state tuition there for undergrad.

I pay out of state tuition, so I guess I'll have to put Oregon. How much does that put me at a disadvantage for not being a resident when I'm applying to public med schools in Michigan or other states?

usually, it's a huge disadvantage. unfortunately, we oregonians are screwed because it's not a much of a disadvantage at ohsu to be out of state. what that means is that we get very little advantage in admissions there. also, we get screwed on tuition, but that's another rant.

anyway, if you want to go to school in michigan, i'd suggest hanging around for a year after graduation and obtaining michigan residency. i don't about michigan specifically, but the normal requirement is that you live in the state for 12 months without being there with a primary purpose of being in school. basically, they want you to stay and work fulltime for a year and pay taxes there.

I don't know about any other states, but in Oklahoma, if you are financially independent of your family, they go by where do you pay state taxes?

yep, that's a question that's always asked when determining residency. if you're independent, where do you pay taxes? if you're dependent, where do your parents pay taxes? for oregon, they asked for all the years when i had filed taxes in oregon. they also asked if i had an oregon license and if i was registered to vote in oregon, and they asked for the dates when i did those things. so, if you want to establish residency in michigan after graduating, get a michigan license and register to vote there asap.
