I'm originally from California, born and raised, and I went to a California school for my undergrad. My mom (who claims me on her taxes as a dependent every year) moved to Arizona for 3 years while I was in college, then Maryland for 1 year, and now resides in South Carolina (been there for about 3/4 of a year). Since graduating, I have moved to Maryland and have lived here for 3/4 of a year. I'm still registered to vote in CA and my drivers license and registration is still for California, but because I need smog check very soon and don't plan on going all the way back to CA to do it, I'm going to be changing my car registration to Maryland.

What state am I a resident of? It's all very confusing.

Thanks!

California schools don't give priority to ca residents, thats why it sucks applying from CA. So u should be ok as long as ur application makes u competitive.

If you live in Maryland, work in Maryland and are not a full time student, you are a Maryland resident. The exceptions to this are few (active duty military, member of the diplomatic corps, member of Congress).

You can claim informal ties to the state, which might give you a bit of a boost, as the adcom would think that you'd want to go to their school if offered admission, so if choosing between you and someone from Maine for UCSF, you would get the priority.

If your mother is claiming you on taxes, you are a resident of whichever state she is a resident of.

If you have made enough money in Maryland to file taxes independently, you become a resident of Maryland when you complete your 12 months there.

Thank you for all your responses/help!
