I have AL residency but will be moving in CA for my new job so I've been thinking about changing my DL and plates to CA. What are people's thoughts on which state's residency I should keep regarding applying to dental school? I love CA but all the schools are pricey. Plus, the ones that aren't too bad with tuition are really selective so there might be a chance I won't get in at all (looking at you, UCLA and UCSF). UAB is reasonable (with in-state) but I'm not sure how desirable of a school it is. I don't know how thrilled I would be to pay almost double to go to school when in state costs $100,000 for all four years. Plus, I really don't want to go back to AL.

A little confused on what to do-- thoughts?

I'd motivate myself to stay in AL. Maybe rent a new apartment/furnish it really well/see a new part of the state. Shopper's therapy right? And, just think, even when you finish doing all of that, you still come out ~90K (pre-interest...after interest this could be like 125-130K)ahead of what you would in Cali. The difference of 100K between AL and Cali would be significant enough to me to choose AL.

You might not have a choice. If this is just a summer job, you can keep your AL residency, but if this is a permanent job (or permanent until you go to dental school) most states have a requirement of when you have to change your DL, etc., usually 30-60 days after you move. Then, since you will be working in CA, you will have to pay taxes in CA. Again, if it's just a summer job, you file as a non-resident, but if it's more than that, you will have to file as a resident of CA and that will change your in-state status.

@ajj70 the job is a 3year-5year position (fortunately/unfortunately).

There is no way you will be able to retain your AL residency for that long working and living out of state. About the only way to do that is if you are in the military.
